I need help with the Retention Bracket Lock :(

I have ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard and AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 1GHz HT Socket 939 Processor.

i inserted the processor into the socket easily without any problem.
although it took some pain out of my thumbs, i managed to lock the heatsink onto the processor/socket using the retention brackets. and here comes the problem , i can't lock the retention brackets using the Retention Bracket Lock. if i force it and push it down, it just flicks back to its "unlock" position. even though it is in "unlock" position, it feels like it is already LOCKED.

has anyone had this problem? does it matter if i don't lock it using the Retention Bracket Lock? it seems like the retention brackets have already locked enough to keep the heatsink in the place. like i tried to re do the procedure, but the retention brackets are too hard to open now. maybe if i regain strength tomorrow, i will be able to try again, but i am hoping it doesn't matter, and i feel like my thumbs are going numb.

thanks for reading and i wish you have the solution to my problem
