This problem sounds familiar to one I had recently with a eMachine T2682.

If the PSU starts as soon as you plug it in, then one of several things are wrong; case power on switch is broke or jammed/PSU is bad/ or the mother board is bad.

I just got done testing out a different psu, with no luck. I have no way to test the mothboard and i doubt the button is stuck. I think the culprit is the motherboard.

does anybody know where i can find a cheap replacement for this thing. I am not even sure what socket the cpu is...

You can order a replacement from eMachines:
http://parts.emachines.com/emachines...oduct_id=68990

Or you can try doing a search on google with the motherboard
SKU: MBEM2246AM37 and see what comes up

I am not an expert on AMD but I think you will need a Socket A microATX type motherboard.

The problem with using a retail motherboard is that you would have to be sure that the PSU isn't a proprietary design. You might get lucky. but with eMachines I would have to assume it would be. Just make sure you check before ordering something.

If you aren't adverse to spending some money (around $300), newegg has some good deals on barebone kits right now. It's another option at least, if you can't get the system fixed for less then $150 anyway.

How can i tell if the psu is proprietary? It has a 20 pin connector and several 4pin molex connectors.

The normal diffrence is that it is wired diffrently. If you have another ATX power supply around, hold the 20pin connectors up together and see if the wires match up. Someone else will probobly be able to give you a better idea. I've never had to do this myself.

Send a message via AIM to Panama Red
Compare your psu 20 pin connector wiring with this link. This is the ATX standard wiring. If it's anything else, it's proprietory.

I think the safest thing to do is to get a new PS with the MB. Most of the time the PS that come with the eMachine computers are under powered ( not enough wattage)
When I did the MB swap in the machine I was working on the original PS was 250W and the new MB required at least 350W
