New Build

Totals up to around $1700

Any suggestions for something better/cheaper but just as good? I'm pretty sure that's everything I'm going to need. I have a copy of XP Home I can use.

Going to be used for future games that I can run with max settings.

If you are not going to OC, could drop the ram done to the Value ram from Corsair.

I most likely will. Do you think stock cooling will do with the PC in an air conditioned room?

Yes. Not using the stock cooling voids your CPU warranty anyways.

Looks like a healthy build. One thing though, you might consider a dual core CPU. Games are starting to take advantage of multi-threading (ie, a dual core or Hyperthreading), so it might be worth looking into.

You might as well drop the motherboard down to the Asus A8N5X. ATI-based cards will not work in SLI so you will be able to save money there. The alternative would be to purchase an nVidia card, keep the A8N-SLI motherboard, and have a potential SLI build. The drawback would be price - SLI is an expensive technology.

Besides saving some money with ValueSelect ram instead of XMS, it looks alright to me.

I would consider a dual core instead, to be more "future-proof". A 4200+ X2 is a good choice, however, is about $25 more. I would stick with that XMS RAM...after the rebate it's $15 cheaper than VS.

I would go to the Athlon 64 X2. My rule of thumb is if the upgrade is $50 or less over the part you where considering, then go for it. The X2 4200+ would be nice boost. And with the rebate on the XMS right now, if you can spend a little more upfront I would stick with it as well.

I agree. Once games take advantage of dual-core technology, the X2 will add even more performance on top of your X1900XTX and 2GB of RAM.
