New Build for College Graduation

Been researching parts for a bit...my older brother's helping me put it together once we get everything. Would love to know if I've made any mistakes here. Going to be throwing out my TV so-to-speak, so that all I have in my room is my comp. Also will be doing some gaming (civ iv, WOW, who knows what else). I've got everything together for around $1100, maybe a little less if I find some deals.

you can save some money by going with a regular PCI-E board instead of an SLI one. Try this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530

If you want to keep the SLI board, then your going to need an nVidia card - ATi doesn't support SLI. I would say the 6600GT is the nVidia equivilent to the card you have picked out.

Also, 450W is pushing it for an SLI/PCI-E rig. It's best to be safe and go with the 550W version of that unit

The mobo you suggested is only 10 bucks less than the one I had, and it doesnt seem to have a firewire port. Is the ATI truly incompatible with an SLI mobo, or does ATI merely not support an SLI setup? I didn't choose the mobo so I could set up 2 GPUs, but it had everything else I wanted. I don't see a point in buying a 1394 card and use up the savings, plus take up an expansion slot.

I'd like to go with the ATI because the benchmarks are better--both core speed and memory over the 6600GT. But, clearly I can't do that if it doesn't work with the board.

Is 450W still too little if I'm not actually utilizing the SLI feature?

A single ATI card will work in an SLI motherboard. As you thought, you just can't use two ATI cards in the SLI set-up.

I just had to figure out which card to go with for a similar build that will be a DVR / HTPC. ATI seems to be a little better in the video aspect of things, so I would stick with them since this will be your TV as well as computer.

Not just any 550W power supply. It *must* be an SLI-Certified power supply (which not all are 550W). However, if you are sticking with ATI video cards and are going to drop the SLI board down to a single slot board (like the ASUS A85NX or the A8N-E), that Antec in the first post should be OK.

Cool. For peace of mind I've really only been considering Antecs...even tho they can be a bit pricey.

You think Antec PSUs are pricey? They're on the low end price wise for something that can power current cutting edge systems. You want sticker shock, look at an Entermax, or one of Silverstones quiet PSUs. Now those will eat your budget.

PC Power and Cooling are the most expensive I've seen so far.

I suggest looking at the BenQ 19" LCD here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824014090

Its only another $5, and it has DVI and a higher response time for gaming.
