Compatable Build?
Im looking to build a pc and have selected these parts but I'm not sure if they work together or not. I tried to select ones that would, but Im new to this.
Case: Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS $139.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133154 PSU: Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 550W Power Supply $84.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931 Mobo: ASUS P5WD2 Premium ATX Intel Motherboard $194.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131534 HDD: A 400gig hitatchi hard drive a friend is giving me CPU: Intel Pentium 4 661 800MHz $408.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116006 RAM: CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) $189.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145575 Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card $121.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102188 Video Card: eVGA Geforce 6800XT 256-P2-N381 $119.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130261 Lan: LINKSYS WMP54G PCI Wireless-G Adapter $49.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833124115 I'm missing fans or something arent I? I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, windows xp, and speakers already. I want a powerful computer to play games, record and listen to music, and use photoshop on. I chose a large case because I hate squeezing my big hands into tiny cases like my current compaq. This is my first build attempt so help me out here. |

That case comes with 4 fans, should be good there. Many people don't like the Hitachi HDs, so my thought is get a smaller Seagate for Windows and apps and use the Hitachi for storeage. Everthing else looks rocking.

Hey thanks for replying
I've thought of that too, Im most likely going to get an external hard drive enclosure and put the hitatchi in that. I want to move all my music and videos on that. Ill be getting the hdd before the computer so illl be able to use it before that. I just want like a 100gig internal hard drive then I guess, thanks for the tip. Im surprised there werent any compatability issues, as all these different sockets and stuff were a bit confusing to me. Im thinking I may wait 2 months for some of the prices to go down though. Will this pc be vista capable? |

Equipment specs for Vista are a little unclear at this time, until the final retail version is out, it's anybodies guess.

You do have one compatability problem. That motherboard uses DDR2. The RAM you have listed is DDR. I would go with this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145527

Nope, can't think of anything I'd chage of the top of my head. I for one like to leave old computers in solid working order though. Never know when the urge to mess with a new linux distro will hit, or you will need a server for one project or another. And you can get DVD-RW drives for under $40 now. But that's just me.

I'd agree too...it's a shame to dismantle a working computer (even if it is old and it would still be usuable if just a CD drive is missing). You might as well get a brand new DVD burner...it probably is quieter, faster, and has more functionality than what you have in the older computers.

It won't max out the settings I wouldn't think, but med to med-high probobly. I'm still running a Radeon 9800 Pro which is the generation before the 6800s, and it will still run most games at a good enough clip to be happy. You should be able to play whatever you want at decent quality until the DX10 cards come out that should be a big jump.

What would i need to improve to run them all at highest settings and be future proofed for a couple of years? Just the video card?

Yeah, the video card pretty well dictates how well games run. You might want to consider dropping the sound card for now and try the onboard sound first. Then upgrade your video card by that much money. You might also drop down to the 651, it'll give you a few more bucks for the video card and I don't think .2 GHz will hurt you very much.
But then you say you listen to music...so then again you might want to keep the sound card. |

The soundcard is really for recording not listening. BUt if I buy a USB nterface for my mics and instruments it doesnt go through the card does it? I could go to the 3.4 and overclock it over 3.6 couldnt I? Ive never done it but ive read about it and it sounds easy.

Yeah, USB interfaces would bypass the sound card. However, I've heard it has some pretty nice recording capabilities. I have the card myself, but I don't use it to record.
Yes, you could overclock, but .2GHz isn't going to have much of an impact on performance. |

Ok im gonna put off the soundcard till later and upgrade the video card. Should I go with this 512mb card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102629 or a 256 mb card. As there are not a lot of 512 cards that cheap it makes me think its crappy quality. Would I be better off getting a decent 256? Im looking in the 200-300 dollar price range for a video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SubCategory=48 Any suggestions? |

Im gonna go for a 512
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102697 310 isnt that bad of a price, good reviews. I picked a large case so the heat and size problems shouldnt affect me much. |

512MB over 256MB generally isn't going to give you much performance boost...I think the X1800XT (256 or 512) would be fine.

Concidering it will take me about 2 months to scratch up the money for this computer I think I might just get the X1900XT instead, im really paranoid about future proofing. A big criticism of computer gaming is having to buy a new card everyyear to play the latest games and i want this computer to last for a couple of years with no upgrades so i dont want to hold back too much. Thanks for all the help I think ive got everything decided now.:

The card's stock cooler will be sufficient. They wouldn't put it on there if it didn't keep it cool enough. The case should come with all the fans you need.
