I'm new to the pc building. It's gone OK so far. I had a short budget to work with, about $600. Here's what I've put together:
- Aspire x-qpack case (black) - 512 ram - Asus P5P800-VM mobo - P4 2.8 processor - 200 mb Maxtor Sata hd - Lite-on DVD burner - D-Link G wireless adapter - Windows XP MCE 2005 I'm probably going to transfer a Hauppage 150 pvr tv tuner into the box or just buy another one. Where I'm a little confused is how to use this on my tv. Do I need to get a new tv card with a tv out? Is there something dedicated to this that is relatively cheap? My brain is fried at this point so any help would be great. thanks, RC |

I'm not sure I'm following you.
If you want to watch TV on your computer, you will need a TV Tuner card like the Hauppage you mentioned. If you want to use your TV as a computer monitor, all you need is S-Video out on your video card.

I'm just looking to use my tv instead of a monitor for shows that I "tape" with my pvr program on the pc. I know that I could go with another tv card with the video/tv out but I'm looking for a cheaper solution.
thanks, RC |

Ok, I understand.
If you want to watch recorded TV shows on the TV, you will need S-Video out. Since you are working with a card that only has S-Video In and onboard VGA, you will need another device. You could use that adapter, though I can't comment on the signal quality it would provide. You would also constantly plug and unplug it if you were using the PC with a monitor. Your best option is probably to buy a cheap video card with S-Video out. Something like a Radeon 9550. You can get one for under $50. Pair it with the TV Tuner card you have and you're all set. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814129041 |
