Gaming PC for Grandsons - Suggestions appreciated
My grandsons (ages 10 and 14) are visiting this summer and to alleviate the constant "He's been on the computer longer than I have" refrain, I decided that we would build a second computer.
Parameters: 1) I would like to do this for under $800. 2) I have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers and don't require a sound card (onboard is sufficient). 3) It must be capable of playing Battlefield 2 (hehe - I plan on kicking some tail Muhahahahahaha). 4) I am planning on upgrading the CPU and possibly adding another video card in the future (once the FX CPUs come down in price). Here is what I have picked out so far. I know I am missing a Power Supply and just took a guess at a satisfactory case (any suggestions would be appreciated). I saw an Ultra XConnect 2 power supply in my local PC hardware store and was impressed with its modular cabling. Mobo: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3500ASBOX Video Card: XFX PVT42EUDE3 Geforce 6800 XTreme 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Memory: Crucial Technology 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model CT12864Z40B CD/DVD: PLEXTOR 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model PX-740A/SW-BL - Retail Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 532 RC-532-SKN1 Black Aluminum bezel, SECC chassis ATX Mid Tower Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks Rick Anderson |

Welcome to PCMech.
What you have so far is good. I would skip the Ultra power supply and put in something like the Antec TruePower II 550w. Don't forget Windows XP. Battlefield 2 thrives on RAM, if you can spend a little extra, 2GB would be a good addition.

One other question - Does the CPU come with a fan or do I need to buy one? If so, any suggestions?
Thanks Rick Anderson |

The CPU wil come with a heatsink and fan if you buy the "Retail" chip. If it says OEM its just the chip.
