Unhappy New Build: Keyboard problems

We have just assembled the following components:

Motherboard: Jetway J775GT4-G
Processor: Intel Pentium D 775 Dual core EM64T
System memory: WINTEC AMPO 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM (2)
Power supply: Cooler Master extreme power RS-430-PMSR/P
Video card: Rosewill R6600 256SLI Geforce 6600 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Express x 16
Western digital 80 gb hard drive
Airnet AWD108 32bit PCI wireless card

CDRW, DVD, floppy drive, keyboard and mouse have been scavenged, mostly from a Dell (vintage 2001)

The sytem starts up, and we have gotten as far as the standard CMOS screen-- at some point the keyboard seems to be no longer connected to the system-- we cannot make any changes in this screen, and after a few clicks, we can no longer navigate. Is the computer crashing? Is it the keyboard?

The motherboard has three jumpers associated with the keyboard/mouse power (PS/2 ports), and USB power (two jumpers for several USB ports. We have tried two different keyoards, a Dell and a no name both PS/2 and USB. These are now at there default setting, which shows up in the CMOS as "Halt on: All, But Keyboard".

We have also tried starting up with a boot disk in the floppy drive, and/or a boot disk in the CD drive (Windows XP Media version)-- doesn't make any difference.

Any ideas about what to try next?

THANKS!
