Yes, it is a good computer - if you are willing to shell out the money.
Building it yourself would save you a fortune, but before we start on a parts list, we need to know your budget. |

ummm if possible around $1000 but i might be able to go over it. I know its a low budget but its all i got from saving. If its not enough i can try and get more.

Does this include a monitor, keyboard, and mouse?
$1000 for a tower is very reasonable. You will be able to get a great PC with that budget. Also, what we need to know is what the computer will be used for. First of all, I'm assuming gaming because the Alienware link, but what else does this machine need to do? Last edited by MakeYourslf2012; 04-26-2006 at 09:41 PM. |

Niope, only reason to replace a keyboard, mouse, or monitor is if something is wrong with them, or you want to upgrade. If you're happy with them, nearly any monitor, keyboard, or mouse bought in the last 10 years will work. And the only reason I say "nearly" is because back in the day they still had serial mice, and some of the first LCDs had funky connectors, but anything even simi-new will work just fine.

Here’s what I suggest for a $1,000 build:
Asus A8N-E…..$90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131530 AMD Athlon 3700+…..$235 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539 eVGA 7600GT…..$180 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130283 Antec 550W 2.0 ATX PSU…..$85 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931 1GB (2 x 512MB) Corsair ValurSelect RAM, PC3200…..$80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440 Western Digital SATA250GB SE16 HD…..$90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144701 Lite-On DVD Burner…..$40 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106013 Lite-On DVD-ROM…..$27 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106992 NEC Floppy…..$6 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821152005 Win XP Home OEM…..$90 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102059 That leaves you around $80 for a nice case, which brings your total to just under 1 grand. It's a nice gaming machine that is very expandable. Feel free to make changes if you like. |

Only thing I would suggest, is if you can swing an extra $60, then go with this CPU,
AMD Athlong 64 X2 3800+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103562 I think it would be worthwhile to have that processor to start with if you can handle it. But if not, don't skimp somewhere else for it. Just something to add to the 'nice to have' list. Other then that minor addition, that's a very nice list. |

I agree, that would have been my second choice, but when I price out build, I like to stay under budget. I mean - you should be able to find a PC case cheaper than $80. If this is the case, then the processor the Staren suggested would probably be best given the promising potential of dual-core CPUs

Those parts will do the job, no problem. But you would need to upgrade them a bit earlier then with MakeYourself's build.
I can't give you any exact dates, but in a general sense, your build is lower power then MY's, so you would need to upgrade it for the latest games at some point. Its up to you whether or not you want to save money now or make a build that will last longer.

The 6800 is a generation back in the video card world. It is still a good card, but one of the 7xxxx series you would get another year or two out of.
The 3000+ is a great CPU. I just put one into a home theater PC I'm building and it's quite fast for it's time, but it isn't ideal for gaming anymore. It would run last years games just fine, but it runs into the same problem as the 6800. It's going to become hard to use as a gaming platform sooner rather then later. |

Information is processed in a "thread". One core can handle one thread, so if we have two cores, the work is split up into two threads - allowing both to be processed at the same time... OR two threads from two different applications can be processed at the same time - allowing you to multitask effectively This article will help you alot: http://www.pcmech.com/show/processors/865/ The list that your friend gave you is a good system, however - there is newer, better, and faster technology out there now which can be easily worked into your budget (for example, the Dual-Core CPU). Like Alaron and Staren said, your eventually going to have to upgrade the PC, and by putting a 3000+ in that system - your only going to have to upgrade sooner. the 7600GT delivers considerably better peformance over a 6800GT, however - you should be able to play most recent games on medium settings with the 6800GT.

The link homi posted was for the 6800 XT, not the 6800GT.
The 7600GT will perform better then the 6800XT, definetly. However, if you are on a budget, the 6800XT will play the games, but without the eye-candy. Its up to you if you want to save money now, knowing you'd need to upgrade sooner, or spend a little more now and have a card that lasts a bit longer. |
