Will this setup work COMPATIBLE??

Hello,

This will be my first build. The price is set around $1200 total from Newegg.com. I "might" want to OC but not now, so I didnt inlcude any cooling equipment. If I could get some input on my setup as far as (speed, performance, and compatibility -will this all work together), that would be great!!

*Do I have best quality equipment for this price range?
*Will all sockets work? Any issues?
* FOR: internet/games/movies/music/some encoding/etc
* Out of 1-10, what would you rate the speed of this? performance?

Thank you in advance.

The graphics card is on the slow side for the newer games. I do not know what games you plan on playing but you may be a little disappointed. FEAR will definately run too slow to be of any fun. Most of the other newer games might be okay if you turn the eye candy way down. With graphics cards you get pretty much what you pay for. You may want to spend more on your graphics card because it is the greatest factor in your refresh rate without having to go to unrealistically low resolutions.

That power supply really isn't suitable for PCI-E boards. It's only a single rail unit with 18 amps on the +12v rail. Stay away from the 7200.8, they have reliability problems, go for a 7200.9. I'd also use something other than the Ballistix ram - it's overpriced and needs a lot of juice to run.

Thanks for some great input.

A couple questions:

1) I hear ballistix is "great". What would I need to power it? What are you referring to that I listed that it wont give it all the juice? What memory are you thinking and 1gig is good enough, right?

2) The power supply was rated "great" from newegg users. What else would you consider? brand? power?

3) As far as video card, this is a 128bit 128mb card. It was rated pretty good doing a google search. With this price range in mind, what would you swap it with for better picture?

4) Also on newegg, the 7200.8 is rated much better than the 7200.9. Any thoughts?

thx in advance.

Question

Alaron- Thank you for letting me know about my threads. Just wanted to see if someone could comment on my updated setup please.

I will be using it for: internet, music, movies, burning, encoding, and I am a basic game player. This cost is about $1200 including shipping from newegg.

1) What video card would you replace this price range with?

2) What are your thoughts about wireless keyboard and mouse

Thanks.

1) It uses higher voltage that value RAM. Something like 2.8V compared to 2.5 or 2.6V with value RAM.

2) Take Newegg reviews with a grain of salt...half the people on there don't know what they are talking about. Also, it's not too helpful if they don't list what they are running on it. Anyway, like glc said, it's not suitable for a PCI-E build. EDIT: Yeah, that's a good choice.

3) See suggestion below...

4) The 7200.8s have had some reliability issues, one of the 9's would be a safer bet. Actually, make sure the one you get has a 16MB cache...that'll give you a pretty good boost. Western Digital also has some SE16 drives that are good.

Personally, I wouldn't go with a server processor. Those are meant for server jobs...I think the Athlon's are more suited towards games.

I would drop the Raptor drive and use the money on a better video card. I would look at one of the 7600GT's or higher...not sure how you are doing on your budget though.

Sorry, can't offer any opinions on the keyboard/mouse.

May not be of much use, but while we're skimming, you don't need the floppy drive.

Most programs install by CD or internet, and USB keys take up the slack that floppies produce.

If there comes a time that a floppy drive is needed, you could simply temporarily hook one up from another computer...
