SATA question

Okay so i am putting together my new PC (2nd time only at doing this) and my MOBO (an Asus P5WD2) booklet said something about not using sata until after windows xp gets installed.
HUH? Its a brand new build with nothing on it yet....so do i somehow connect the HDD up as non SATA until i get my OS loaded and then hook it up again but this time as SATA? That seems lame....
And if that is what i have to do then how do i do it?

Also, another question....the SATA is new to me...how do those connections work anyways? Theres a lot of cables that came with the mobo and I cannot imagine using even half of them....what is what?
ANd there is this real short cable with two connections, one on each end -that has totally baffled me as to what the heck it is. Its kind of gold/shiny looking, with black connections that have two rows to pin holes (don't know if that is enough to explain to you but i don't know how else to describe it!!)

If you motherboard has an onboard SATA controller, then you can install the drive right away; I wouldn't bother with that messege. There shouldn't be a problem.

The SATA interface is basically the same concept as ATA/IDE, just plug in the drive to the SATA connector on the motherboard and the BIOS automatically detects the drive. It's all plug and play.

This is what the SATA cable should look like:

Is this the connector that you are talking about? I attached it at the bottom.

If so, it's called the GT Soft Bridge and it's the bridge to connect two cards running in SLI mode. Your guess is as good as mine as to why Asus would include this in your motherboard bundle when it doesnt support SLI.

That cable is a "GT Soft Bridge" - no use for it at this time, but in the future it *may* allow you to use 2 video cards in SLI if Nvidia approves the 955X chipset.

yes, that is exactly the cable i am talking about - thanks. Hey you guys Are GOOD... I gave a cheesy description and you nailed it...i am impressed!

yes my mobo has a connection for several sata connections - like four of them. So I should be okay to just connect and go right?
Thanks

Yep, just plug it in and go, it doesnt matter what connector you plug it into either.
