Hi folks,
This seems a nice place to get some help, and by God I need it!! I Have Just put together a "Build it yourself" package I brought over here in Sweden, Consisting of ASUS P5VD1-X motherboard, with pentium 4 2.8G, MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX 10 200GB H/D and samsung/toshiba SH-W162c dvd cdR/W. I did not get any operating system with it, but as I have Windows XP running on my old pc (600M snail-like thing) and an original copy of windows 98 I thought I could get it up and running. I have formated the hard drive with maxtors dos based program, in the new pc, and when I install new HD in my old pc it appears, but in new pc it appears in BIOS but no sign of it in DOS. This also applys for the CD/DVD drive(I am using a DOS disk from old PC) I have tried installing old hard drive in new pc and I get error message and several options to re-start but whatever I try the thing just re-boots. Windows never starts. When I try and run 98 set up i get the error message Device driver not found 'OEMCD001' No valid cd rom device drivers selected I have checked the samsung/toshiba web sites, but cant find any dos driven drivers for the drive, and have just about run out of ideas... I am sure that the thing is all connected together right and have tried ever combo of master / slave possible with the drives, The most worrying thing is that in dos the only drives it recognises are a: and b: , both of which are my floppy... Can someonr please help?????????????? |

Try these things: Clear the BIOS either by removing the batery for a few minutes or if there is a "clear cmos" jumper on the mobo. Double check as to the type of data cable you have:40 wire or 80 wire. 80 wire should be set to CS/40 to master/slave. What ever HD your going to use, do a zero fill with Killdisk. Go into the BIOS and set the CD as first boot device. Put in the Windows CD and reboot. Let the Windows install format the drive.

You should not use the Maxtor setup program - and you should not attempt installing Win98.
You need a XP CD with SP1 or SP2 incorporated, just boot with it and go into Setup. Delete all existing partitions, then create a new partition and go for it. If your version of XP is an upgrade, just swap the 98 CD into the drive when it asks to find the compliant operating system for the upgrade, then swap the XP CD back in when it's satisfied. |

Thanks also glc...., but my problem is that the only cds I have are windows 95 and windows 98, my xp came with my old pc ready installed and second hand, I do have a "back up" copy of xp a friend lent me to try (naughty, but i am desperate!!) but that refuses to boot, I try and boot from cd and the thing says somthing like "remove disk and replace with boot media" or somthing like, everything dos based ive tried has worked, but i cant get any joy at all from windows, is it possible to alter my windows settings on my old hard drive and just move the drive into the new pc?

I think you need to spend the $90US (equivalent) for a new legal OEM copy of XP Home. You are going to have a very difficult time installing Win98 on that hardware, if it's even compatible. There's the hard drive size issue, processor speed issue, and chipset compatibility issue.
