Question How to properly install drivers?

Hello all,

Ive recently set up my own rebuilt system, and had to restore the hard drive, and reset my motherboards cmos. Now that i have most everything back up and running, i thought i would ask a question that i have never been very sure of.

Where do i install driver software, if i'm installing it manually?

Problem is, my motherboard drivers (audio, chipset,USB2.0 ect.) were on a disc i no longer have. Of course the mobo's web site has all the drivers free for download, but has each driver individually (CD had auto install/setup options). I had thought i was doing things fine.... just downloading the drivers and installing the set up files.

I havent noticed any problems until attempting to use an ipod with the computer... "device would preform faster ifplugged into high speed port."

I thought i had the high speed drivers installed already, but apparently not. I tried to install the same set up file a few times, but no change. I even checked all the BIOS settings to make sure it was enabled.

Still, no ports on the front or rear show up as high speed or enhanced in the device manager... leaving me to assume that it is something wrong i am doing with the installation.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Have you installed SP2 yet? Assuming you're running XP. Did you install the chipset drivers for the mobo? Have you enabled the High Speed USB in the bios?

Yes, to all questions. However, the chipset drivers may not have been properly installed either, if the USB 2.0 drivers aren't working. I know the audio drivers installed correctly, however, they had an exe file, and installed in a pre-defaulted directory. Now that i think about it, the other drivers seem to have just unzipped in the "mobo drivers" folder i created.

If all they did was unzip - now you have to look for setup.exe in the folder where they unzipped to. Chipset drivers first, then video, sound, and ethernet drivers, etc. Are any devices flagged in device manager?
