Workstation Computer Component List
This thread is related to the thread titled - 99% Upgrade.
The proposed computer is intended for light office work (not Microsoft Office). No particular emphasis on any particular component or feature. I just want to run the component list by you guys (and gals) first, just in case there are some incompatibilities. Motherboard - Asus P5RD2-VM (ASUS Website) Case - Antec Overture II Power Supply - 450 watt PSU included with Case Processor - Pentium 4, 506 @ 2.66 GHz Memory - Corsair ValueSelect (2x256MB), DDR2, 240-pins Hard Drive - Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Plus, 80 GB, SATA Keyboard + Mouse - Generic Combo Optical Drive - LG DVD-ROM/CD Drive OS - Windows XP Home, OEM As always, any suggestions are welcome, as this is a preliminary component list. Thanks! Last edited by Kareeser; 05-06-2006 at 01:31 PM. |

I've decided to change the SATA Hard Drive to an IDE Hard Drive.
The computer is not likely to change configurations anytime soon, and the source PC's motherboard only accepts IDE cables. |

I'd go with an Intel chipset, I'm very unimpressed with the ATI chipset motherboards. You can't beat the stability of an Intel processor on an Intel chipset. If you want an upgrade path to a dual core processor, look at the P5LD2-VM, otherwise the P5GV-MX or P5GD1-MX standard DDR boards are fine. If you really want to keep it cheap, the P5P800-MX (old 865 chipset) is hard to beat, but it only has legacy PCI slots so you won't have a video card upgrade path. Speaking of which - the PCI-E slot on the P5GV-MX only runs at x4 and only accepts certain cards. On any of these boards, the onboard Intel video will handle office work just fine.

Once again, my Motherboard seeking skills prove inadequate
![]() Thanks for the good suggestions, glc, I've decided to go with the P5P800-MX. The onboard audio, graphics, and LAN are perfect for my (and my parents') needs. I've also changed to DDR RAM, for that particular board. The SATA ports will also allow me to create a hard drive clone fairly easily, onto a SATA drive. Thanks!
