Advice / Tips For 1st PC Build

Hey Everyone ... Just wanted to get some advice / tips while i'm in the process of buying the pieces for my 1st PC build. So far I have the follow parts:

case: Asus Vento 3600 (red)

mobo: Asus P5VDC-MX Via Socket 775 MicroATX Motherboard

processor: Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz Processsor with Fan

Memory: Ultra 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz

Psu: Ultra X-Finity 500-Watt ATX 120mm Fan SATA-Ready SLI-Ready

I'd like to know what HD I should invest in (thinking something SATA), what DVD/CD-R drives (really want plextor or nec after having tons of trouble with Lite-on in my last machine) and video card (was thinking XFX GeForce 7600 GT .. not a big gamer, but play the occasional game)

Mostly will be doing audio production and graphic arts work (photoshop)

Make sure you read the manuals - they really do help. Also, take the building process slow, theres no rush to get it together.

Wester Digital has a line of SATA drives that have a 16MB buffer. I suggest them.

Plexor always seems to be on the expensive side, and if you don't like using Lite-On drives, then NEC will do just fine.

The 7600GT is a great card for what you are going to use this system for. However, while nVidia produces pure "gaming" cards, ATi's cards are more rounded and known for thier "display" performance. With that said, I beileive the ATi X1600 line is the equivilent of the 7600GT, and may perform better in graphic design work.

You may want to go to a PCI-E mother board. That board is AGP only with only 2 ram slots.

I don't believe there are any AGP 7600GTs. Since that board only has an AGP slot, you'll be stuck with older video cards and it won't be upgradable (in the video department).

I just looked at the specs of the mobo and it listed this:

PCI Express Support
The P5VDC-MX fully supports PCI Express, the latest I/O interconnect technology that speeds up the PCI bus. PCI Express features point-to-point serial interconnections between devices and allows higher clockspeeds by carrying data in packets. This high-speed interface is software compatible with existing PCI specifications

that would be PCI correct?

According to Asus web site the P5VDC-MX supports PCI-E x1 with on-board video.

Almost all mainstream graphics cards use a PCI-Express 16X slot or AGP 8X.

You need a PCI-E x16 slot to use a PCI-E graphics card...your board only has an x1 slot - the card won't physically fit in the slot. You have to get an AGP card.

The best advice was already given here, Read all the manuals given.

Here's a couple of mine own I usually tell people building for the first time.

-If the CPU doesn't drop right in don't force it

-Don't over tighten the motherboard screws, They just need to be snug

-When installing the Memory it's easiest to work from the sides, Same applies to video cards.

-Try to keep your wires away from the Fans and Cooling Devices.. I recommend zip ties to keep everything nice nice

Ugh! I wish I knew all this before ... seems like it's much easier to just buy a PC off the shelf. I looked at my order for Tiger Direct and it seems I can return the mobo but not the P4 chip. Knowing this now, can anyone make a suggestion on a mobo I should purchase for this P4 Chip ( Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz / 2MB Cache / 533 FSB / Socket 775 / Dual-Core ). Any help would be appreciated ... would like to have the PCI-E X16 slot and keep the price under $200.

thats no problem. Return the motherboard and we'll just find a replacement compatable with your system.

does it have to be a Micro ATX board?

If not, try the Asus P5LD2:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131538

It a little bit more expensive than the board you had picked out, but it supports all the component you have listed and leaves room for major upgradablitiy.

thanks for the link, however I am stuck with the CPU that came with that mobo I purchased from Tiger ... it list it's FSB as 533, do not see that supported here on the mobo you posted a link to.

http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/c...Language=en-us

It lists the 805 as compatible in the CPU support (Search by Motherboard -> Socket 775 -> PDLD2).

Building a PC can be daunting the first time around...but we'll help you the best we can.

ASUS lists 533's on their product page.

http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l...15&modelmenu=1

Newegg's descriptions aren't always complete...the P5LD2 is an excellent choice.

thank you so much for your help! I've always worked on adding things to pre-built system, so this is my new project. I hope after this things will go smoothly.
