Hey all, I've alotted about $2500 to spend on components for a new gaming pc including case, disk drives, everything. I'm leaning toward AMD processors. Any suggestions on CPUS, vid cards, sound cards, DVD-Roms, etc?

Thats a huge budget to work with, and if you don't need a monitor and periphials, then chances are you don't have to spend that much.
First thing is first.. Have you decided if you want to go with an AMD or Intel processor? Would you like to build an SLI system? |

The monitor and peripherals are already taken care of so the $2500 is for just the pc itself. I'm leaning more toward AMD and yes the SLI system is something I'm interested in. I also have been reading that AMD is now starting to move toward DDR2 memory cable mobo's, is that something I should wait for as well? And also that Windows Vista will have Direct X 10 and that some of the current video cards won't completely utilize DirectX 10 when it comes out.
But yes I am leaning toward AMD processors and SLI based system. |

Yes, AMD's new socket, the AM2, officially supports DDR2 and will be released later this year. There won't be a large performance increase at first, but it is full of potential.
Considering the amount of money you want to spend on this system, I think it may be best to wait. Normally, I dont recommend to wait for new hardware to be released, but seeing these circumstances, it will prolong the life of your expensive system. However, the decision is up to you. |

I've heard that they will release it later this month, but don't quote me on that. Then I'd possibly wait another month for a wider variaty of motherboards to come out...and for them to work out any bugs (ie, new BIOS versions).

Nope you got it right. Despite rumors of a delay the DDR2 processors and boards are out this month. So it's going to be a really brief wait.

Projected date is the May 25. Since you're doing a new build wait till 'after' then. This is a time when waiting will pay off. |
