New build
Hello all,
I am currently working on a new computer for a friend of mine. This is my 4th build, but i have always used the northwood core on intel p4. Seeing as these no longer are made, and I failed to keep up to date, i need a little help on choosing a mobo and cpu please. The basics are: Pci Express support( looking into the x800) 1 gig of DDR2 ram Sata hard drive support The case will be air cooled. We are looking at a mid or mini tower. Does anyone have any suggestions on what hardware to use. We have a budget of around $1300 Thank you. EDIY: Added budget |

What's your friend do with the computer?
I'd suggest an ASUS P5LD2 and an Intel 930. I think that's $350 there. 2x512MB DDR2 (I'd recommend Corsair Value Select) - $70-$80 250GB HDD (w/ 16MB cache - WD SE16s are good) - $90 Antec Sonata II (w/ 450W Antec PSU) - $100 LITE-ON DVD-RW - $40 Assuming a gaming rig, you could probably get something in the range of a 7900GT ($300) Win XP Home OEM - $90 That's about $1050 so far...you could throw in 2 gigs of RAM for another $80 or so. This is based off www.newegg.com prices and assuming you are in the US.

A socket 775 board from Asus or Intel and a hyperthreading or Dual core processor would be good. Pick a board that will fit the case you choose and has the options you want ( video firewire, PCI-E slots etc)
Case/power supply: Take a look at Antec, one of the very few brands that come with high quality power supplies [LEFT Hard Drives: Seagate or Weatern Digital 16Mb cache.[/LEFT] Opticals: I prefer Liteon Floppy: Might be needed during setup, or later for diagnostics. OS: XP Home w/SPII, OEM if you are willing to troubleshoot it for him, Retail if he wants Microsoft's support. Ram: Corsair value select, use the configurator at Corsair, or check the list at the motherboard makers site to be sure you order a compatible part number. Vid Card: Depends if he plays games that need a high powered card or not, onboard video is fine for basic office/email/internet purposes. Sound card: The new motherboards usually have integrated 7 or 8 channel sound that is pretty good. Aftermarket cpu cooler; Not needed and voids the processor warranty if used on a boxed processor that came with the stock unit.

Sorry about the double post.
Does the Mobo need to list duel core support if I am going with a PD or are all PD board supporting duel core? |

All Pentium D processors are dual core. If the board lists Pentium D as supported, then you just have to check that it supports the particular Pentium D that you choose.
Enter the processor in the configurator on this page and it will list the boards that Intel has certified as compatible. You can also check the motherboard makers website for thier list of compatible processors.

One more question.
I am looking at this asus board here on newegg. I was reading through the reviews and i am now a bit worried. The board has everything we need on it. The reviews comment that the board has old bios and will not runn the 900 series on these. Is there any truth to this? |

Depending on how long ago the board was made, you might need a bios update to support a 9xx dual core. See the cpu support list here.
I think you might need an older cpu to get it running untill you upgrade the bios, but am not certain about that.

I think ASUS may ship you an updated BIOS chip (provided it's removable) if the one shipped doesn't support your CPU. I'm not postive about that, but I have heard of manufacturer's shipping updated BIOS chips. If that review was months ago, you might be OK, as Newegg has probably gone through its stock and has gotten a new shipment lately.
It would be better to get a dual channel kit like this. Also, you really don't need DDR2 667 - DDR2 533 is fast enough. Last edited by blue60007; 05-11-2006 at 07:54 PM. |
