1st build
Alright i am looking to build a PC that can so a lot of things and not cost a lot of money. I have scraped a few pieces from my old computer and have been left with a DVD RW drive, Audigy 2 ZS, creative 5.1 speakers, wireless adapter, and Microsoft wireless mouse and Keyboard. I recently bought a 32 inch flat screen TV with a DVI output. And was looking to make it my monitor. I want to be able to record/watch TV, DVDs, listen to Music, and play games on this TV/monitor and have it mounted on my wall. I am looking at 2 seperate HD. One small 15,000 rpms for my operating system and games and a large 7,200 rpms for my music, pictures, and videos.
I dont want to spend anymore than 1,500 dollars on this. Preferably closer to 1000 but I know sometimes it cant be done. I have never really taken on a project like this before but I'm pretty sure I know enough about hardware to make this work. I was thinking this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146018 from what I hear it keeps things pretty cool and comes with a 500 watt PS These HDs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822116150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144392 The 15,000 rpm hd is scsi? I dont really know what that means but I know I have to make sure my mobo is compatible. This video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130281 I'm pretty confident it will run F.E.A.R and all the rest of those high end games. This TV Tuner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116625 I dont really know much about what makes a TV tuner card very good. This DVD RW drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815116625 I know I said I already have one of these but i want 2 At this point my I have 816 dollars worth of stuff in my shopping cart. I need Ram, a mother board, and a CPU. I am really indifferent to AMD or intel but have just had intel my whole life and prefer it just cause I'm more familiar with it. My mother board needs a pci express 16x slot for my video card and I would prefer it to have 3 or 4 pci slots. I dont know anything about the scsi so I am kinda in the dark about the mother board. I want a 3.0 or 3.2 ghz processor and 2 1gig sticks of ram. I have had the hardest time finding a motherboard with the right slot for my video card, that will let mys use standard (pc 3200) ram, and have a few PCI slots. Maybe I just don’t know what I am talking about and where to look but can someone point be in the right direction with this mobo so I can finish this build? |

Pretty good start, but I have some suggestions.
For an Intel build, the Asus P5LD2 and the Intel 9xx CPUs are a great combination. Intel CPUs use DDR2 ram now. Use Corsair ValueSelect that is DDR2-533. Skip SCSI and go with a Western Digital Raptor drive. It is SATA, the common interface and they are plenty fast at 10,000rpm. SCSI is more for server-type use. For the other drive, go with a SATA drive with a 16MB cache. If you like that case get it, but pitch the power supply. The Antec TruePower 2.0 550watt is a great power supply. |

Just to give an alternative to what Alaron has, if you went the amd route:
Mobo : ASUS A8N-SLI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail or the Premium Version -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131524 -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131540 Processor: Might want to go dual core, but thats up to you, if you do it would save you upgrading in the near future. Ram: CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145575 As for the hard drive, do what Alaron said and go with the raptors, theyll give you great performance. |

Your DVD drive link is a duplicate of the tuner card link. Liteon is a pretty good choice in DVD drives. Hauppage is a pretty good tuner card.

Before I drop serious cash on a nice video card is everything gonna be bottle-necked at my 32" tv?

You wouldn't happen to know what the resolution on it is? It looks like a 7900GT could handle FEAR at 1600x1200 (yours is probably a widescreen resolution) and 2x AA at a playable frame rate. Also, I'm not sure how FEAR would handle a widescreen resolution...you *can* edit the resolution manually, but it doesn't mean it will always work right.

I have built "dream machines" in my head and in my shopping cart for the past few days but finally this afternoon I came up with a configuration that I am was pretty happy with and I bought.
Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E168131212483 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116198 Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150139 TV Tuner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815100140 Ram: (2) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141224 HD1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144160 HD2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822123009 Optical Drive 1: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827152058 Floppy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16821152005 Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146018 PS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817148027 Stuff I already have... Optical 2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106019 Sound card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102163 Speakers: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121120 Mouse/Keyboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823109133 Wireless: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833127145 TV/Monitor: https://www.westinghousedigital.com/...32-lcd-tv.aspx I took your guys’ advice and stayed away from the SCSI and stock PS. I looked into the duel cores but I'm not a multi-tasker. I'm not sure why at the last minute I decided to add 2 more gigs but you can never have too much. I also switched the TV tuner card due to the High def capabilities. I do a lot of file sharing and need a new big external drive so I figure I will just store all my media in there and be able to bring it with me everywhere. I was gonna look into overcloocking but I really don’t know anything about it. It seems like a pretty good way for me to burn up all the parts I just bought so I am gonna wait. I hope everything works! |

Windows x32 won't be able to address about a gig of that RAM.
One concern: See if you can return that power supply. A 500W CPU for $35 is a big time red-flag. You should be paying at least twice that for quality power supplies in that range. See if you can get the Antec TruePower 2.0 550watt that Alaron suggested. What motherboard did you end up getting? Apparently the board no longer exists on Newegg. |

Link to my motherboard.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813121248
I know the power supply is knid sketchy but I have read a lot of reviews on newegg and it seems to be legit. Even if it only lasts me 8 weeks... I was running out of cash for this build and had to get a power supply. I plan on installing Windows Vista build 5381 64bit |

Your build list looks fine except for the power supply.
If you are trying to save a few dollars, we can find other places to trim back. I would start by getting just 1 set of RAM for now and buying a second set later. The power supply is not a place to go cheap. It is the heart of the whole system. Poor power supplies can lead to instability and even fry your components when they die. I strongly recommend the Antec 550: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103931 |

Personally, I don't think that is a very good idea to go with the 64 bit vista.
A: Lack of 64 bit driver support. B: A prerelease OS is going to have a lot of bugs. OEM XP Home w/SPII would be my choice.

Alright... Newegg still hasent processed my order because it was placed over the weekend so I ordered a different power supply. I am really anxious to use Vista but understand that it will probably be too buggy and will use XP but whats better home or pro? What about media center?

If you do not have a home network, then XP Home is the more economical choice. In my experience, XP Pro seems to be much better at "finding" the router and connecting you to the internet than XP Home.

You really only need pro if you have a large network (like at an office). XP Home works fine for me on a small home network.

Alright so Yesterday all my parts came from newegg. My girlfriend and I put it together and finished right before I had to leave for work. I didn't even have time to test it. When I got home I tested it and I couldnt get the signal to my TV. I was using a brand new DVI cable. So I tried it on an old crt monitor using he VGA and my onboard video to try to pin point the problem. Still got no signal. I am pretty sure I plugged everything correctly does anyone have any idea what I should do? Do I have a faulty motherboard?

3 things to check.
Is the card fully seated? Is the power to the card connected (6 pin adapter to 2 4 pin power supply connectors)? Did you install the video card drivers and direct X 9.0?

ALright I dont know how I fixed my problem but I did. just sat unplugged everything and plugged it back in and tried it again and I got a display. I went through my bios and all my hardware is registering but when I inserted a XP home it told me NTLDR is missing. I thought there might me both my dvd drives were reading as master drives so I unplugged one just too eliminate confusion. I restarted my computer and am stll getting the message. A friend of mine tried a pirated version and it did'nt give me the error message but 10% into the install it kept telling me it couldn't find files. Can someone help me?
