Check and make sure that all of your power connectors are plugged in. There is the 20 (or 24) pin power, and an alternate 12V (2 x 2) plug.

The 20 pin power plug is only used.
I am trying the test set-up as recommeded by "HAL" when build does not work. Is snything supposed to show up on monitor? Olnly have MB outside of case, CPU+heatsink, video card, 1 stick RAM, monitor conneted as per instructions here. www.forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=132409 |

Sounds like the video card. Make certain the card is firmly seated and if required, the power plug is plugged into the video card. You should see the BIOS on the screen.

lytake, you have to plug in the 12V plug in the mb. It's the square connector with four pins. Your reply seems to suggest you only plugged in the main mb power connector (20/24 pins). The ATI 9800 pro card also has a connector for a molex plug from the PSU. Make sure it's connected or your video card won't work.

This Motherboard only has 20 pin power connector. I pushed video card as hard as I could and is locked in. A power cord is connected to video card and the fan on the video card spins.

Well, you have a bad processor, motherboard, ram, power supply, or video card. Connect a case speaker to the board - any beeps? Any beeps if you pull the video card and try it? Any beeps if you pull the ram and try it?
Odds are - in my opinion - that it's the motherboard. It's the only known low quality component you have. |

I looked at a picture of your board and it looks like there is a square connector (12V power) right next to the RAM slots...it's hard to tell in the picture. What is that plug for?
EDIT: Come to think of it - I don't think these older boards and CPUs required the additional plug.

I think I am learning a hard, sad lesson. This is a brand new replacement motherboard from ECS. (The first one was fine until I tried to upgrade W2K to XP, and Matrox 32 bit video card to ATI about 2 months after first build.).
On your advice, I connected speaker wires. Removed video card - no beeps. Removed ram - no beeps. Tried another, older video card - "no video signal detected" message appeard on monitor. Well, at this point, I'm not sure what to do. Try to get another replacement? Is it worth trying to find another Socket A motherboard? OR Purchase another motherboard + CPU since other components (case, Ram, video card are good components. Opinions are welcome. |

Yes, I think I see a 2x2 connector right next to the ram slots, opposite the northbridge heatsink. Gotta use it if that's what it is.

No other connector present. In manual : ATX 1 : ATX 20 - pin standard power supply connector needs to be connected.

I'm not sure I understand the white thing you refer to . There is a white square in a corner for the mouse and keyboard connedtion. The white between the AGP slot and the RAM are the locks for the RAM..
The white on the other end of the RAM slots are the other locks. These are near the 20 pin power connector. |

This is the connector we are questioning:
I circled it in red. |

I think it's ECS's annoying habit of making a lot of revisions of the same board. Lytake, can you see a revision number somewhere on your board ?
