I'm trying to build my first system, and I need help. I have the monitor, HDD, DVD Rom and CD Rom, Keyboard, mouse and rest of cables from another system.
I don't need it for games but I'll do video and photo editing. My budget for this project is arround $600. I was thinking at an Asus motherboard and P4 with HT technology and DDR2 memory. More a case and power suplyThermaltake. I was looking at these MB Asus P5P800 Motherboard (Pentium 4 Processor w/ HT Technology, Socket 775, Intel 865PE, ATX, 4GB DDR, 800MHz FSB - SKU: P5P800) Asus P5GD2 Motherboard (Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology, Socket 775, Intel 915P Express, ATX, 4GB DDR, 800MHz FSB - SKU: P5GD2) Asus P5GDC Deluxe Motherboard (Pentium 4 w/ HT Technology, Socket 775, Intel 915P, ATX, 4GB DDR, 800MHz FSB - SKU: P5GDCDELUXE) What is the best choice? Can you guys recomend something better? thank you very much |

Unless that hard drive is SATA the P5GD2 is out since it can only connect 2 PATA devices,
The Deluxe can manage 6 ( is that 'C' a typo?) so you'll be able to use all your drives. P5P800 is either AGP or a micro board, it also uses plain DDR instead of DDR 2. It's not a bad board so we'll hold it in reserve while we add the other parts. An ATI X1300 card would be your best bet since you're not a gamer. That leaves a gig of ram, and a modern case/power supply. So the motherboard (open box but not a refurb) : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16813131506R $128.99 Graphics : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102640 $83.00 Case/power supply : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129152 $49.00 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104952 $ 36. 99 memory : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145526 $79.99 That leaves the cpu. Must you have Hyper-threading and would you accept a Celeron? Say this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116225 Which operates at 3.2 GHz and will cost you $74.99 If you can get a case you like locally the price will drop, since that will be the highest shipping charge, further. total : $452.96 shipping and handling : If it all goes out at once from newegg I'd put another $40 on the price. so then : $492.96. This is a bare bones price so if you want to play around with more memory or faster processor you have room to do so.

Why not this board? It's cheaper and hasn't been opened.
Do you think this case/PSU will suffice? glc suggested it a while back for low-end PCI-E builds.

I like that board. It's a better choice than mine.
I'd say no to that case/PSU though. If micmicul ever does any upgrading (and owners of home builds don't?) it would leave him very little in the way of overhead. |

Yeah, that is what I was thinking too. It should be fine, but it would rule out any upgrades. I'd say go with your suggestion, that looks like a powerful power supply (and the price is good).
