I recently built a computer. I had it working fine but i quickly ran out of HDD space. I took a HDD out of an old computer without formatting it first and put it in the new one. Im pretty sure i had the jumpers correct too. When i booted up it just said Disk Boot Error, insert system disk and hit enter. So I put in a disk that had fdisk on it and wanted to restore boot settings but it never gave me the option. Ive tried every jumper configuration with only one and both hard drives i can think of. What causes this error and how do I fix it. I really need this working soon. Please help!

Are you just trying to add the second hard drive for additional space or are you replacing the original hard drive?
What operating system are you using? Please post the complete system specs for your computer. List all the parts by brand and model including the power supply. Cricket

Are both hard drives on the same IDE cable or on separate channels?
You need to double check that the jumpers are both set to CS. Make sure the IDE cable is connected properly. Blue connector to motherboard, black connector on the end is the master and grey connector in the middle is the slave. Cricket

Do as Cricket says and then go into hour bios setup and make sure that both HDDs are properly detected. Also, check the boot order in your bios setup. Make sure that your old HDD is set to boot before the one that you just added.
Note, if that drive you added is bad and is on the same ide channel as your old hard drive, it can cause everything on that channel to not be detected resulting in a no system disk error. |

Well I thought one of the jumpers had to be set to master and another one to slave. They are on the same cable. The second hard drive isnt bad, i used it right before i took it out and put it in my new computer. In the boot priority screen it only allows me to set it as hard drive, i never can set hd1/2

If you use 80 wire IDE cables, the cable determines which drive is master or slave so need to set the drives to CS(cable select).

You probably need to reverse the boot order for the hard drives. What's the current boot order ? See if the bios has an option to change the hard drive boot order.

Ok i was forced to reinstall windows so now the computer works again but i havnt attempted to get the second hard drive working yet in fear of it screwing up my computer again. how do i format the hard drive or whatever to get it to be used as storage. also when i was setting up windows i saw the storage hdd was being seen as somewhere around 30 gb when its actually 60. i need to fix that also. thanks.

Start>control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management Remove any partitions on the storage drive and begin again.

Make sure you didn't set the cylinder limitation jumper. It's very easy to read the jumper block upside down. Setting the cylinder limitation jumper will make a drive appear to be 32gb regardless of how big it really is.

To add to what glc has said, when you formatted the storage drive did you remember to check for and remove any partitions on it?
