First build - cpu & mobo compatable?

I posted my full list of components previously, which a few of you "approved".

I'm currently trying to fit the cpu onto the motherboard.

Celeron D 336 Prescott, LGA 775 processor
ASUS P5GD1-VM Socket T (LGA 775) mobo

The processor fits into the socket fine. But the load plate doesn't seem to fit over the processor. There are two "flanges" that appear to hold the processor in place, but it seems like a lot of force is required to close the socket lever.

Is this right?

Also, does this processor require thermal paste?

thanks

Well, I couldn't wait so I pushed the lever down and locked it in place. Nothing broke, or snapped. Everything seems fine.

But my second question still holds; do I need thermal compound? The processor instructions don't say anything about it.

The stock cooler already has a thermal pad applied to the bottom. Make sure there isn't any plastic covering it and you are ready to go.

After placing the processor into the socket and after you've closed the socket with the lever arm, the load plate should come down and latch on comfortably onto the socket. Here is a nice depiction from Intel on how to latch the plate after the processor is socketed. You do not need additional heat sink compound than that which is already on your heat sink fan.
