Exclamation Newly built comp will post with one beep immediately shut down w/out access to bios

Hi!

I just built a new computer for the first time. Everything was going great , but when I turned on the computer for the first initial boot up, the computer beeped once and then 5 seconds later it shut off before allowing access to the bios. Can you help me trouble shoot?

Here are all my components: All are brand new and I had the mobo and processor checked)

Case - Aspire X - Cruiser 420 power supply
mobo - Intel P4 D101Ggc
processor: P4 Processor 506, LGA775 PKG
2.66 GHZ, 1MB L2 cache, 533mhz FSB
HDD- Maxtor 100 GB Buffer 8mb
memory - 1 gb memory ddr PC32 corsair single module 400 mhz

I was so psyched to troubleshoot all the other setup problems to get this close and not to be able to use my boot disk or access the bios is very frustrating. Anything anyone can do to help would be awesome!!!

Thanks,

Braindigger

When you say shut off, do you mean that it switches off totally (fans stop) ? That often points to a short somewhere, so try an out of case build

I'm not very big on the power supplies that come with Aspire cases - there have been reports of a lot of trouble with those. I ordered a seperate power supply unit to supplant the Aspire PSU that came with my system. While I realize this is your first build, do you have another power supply on hand that you could test the system with? Another things to check - is the heat sink making direct contact with the processor on the socket? Are the arms on the heat sink pushed in all the way in onto the motherboard? Are all the fans spinning up as needed during the five second of life?

I had the same problem. I figured out I had a screw too tight on the mother board. It was slightly bending one corner of the mother board. Took the screw out and it worked. Worth a try.
