power supply problems?

I have mistakenly bought a new 400w power supply with a 24 pin connector. My mobo is an Asrock p4 800VM with a 20 pin connector and a 4 pin 12v connector. what is the 4 pin used for and how can I connect the power supply without damaging anything?

Thanks Geetee

What power supply did you get (brand)?

Most I've seen have removable 4 pin segments to make it compatible with 20 pin connectors.

Yes, like blue says, you may be able to snap off the end of the 24-pin power plug, to turn it into a 20-pin plug.

The 4 pin 12V alternate power connector is located near the CPU, and requires a second connector from the power supply unit. (it is a 2x2 block)

Take a look at this picture. The 4 pins at the bottom are the ones that disconnect. The picture is an Antec, but other brands use a similar setup.

Not all do, I have seen some that don't. This one doesn't.
