New build, cant get the harddrives detected or working

I have everything installed and working properly and the hard drives are spinning. When I start the computer up it recognizes CD roms but not the hard drives. I bought a new maxtor 20.4 Gb for the master and used another HD out of an old computer for the slave. (jumpers set correctly) I tried going into CMOS and auto detecting..nothing. Everything is connected correctly and I tried several sets of connectors just to make sure that wasnt the problem. Im planning on installing windows 2000 professional if I can get this fixed. Any suggestions???

I installed a Mach Speed Matrix P4M800 Socket 478 Motherboard, Intel 340 2.93 533FSB processor.

I truly appreciate any advice you can give. Without it im not sure where to go from here.

Try jumpering both drives to Cable Select (CS).

I tried jumping both to cs. Re booted they werent recongnized. So I re set the jumpers to master and slave and still nothing. I also went in and tried to auto recognize the harddrives in CMOS. Did I do something wrong or should I try something else?
Thanks!

Disconnect the second drive until after Windows is installed. One bad drive on an ide channel can render the entire channel inoperative. Also, make sure you are using an 80 wire cable if using CS jumpering. If the problem persists, try a new ribbon cable. If none of these ideas work, I'd say you have a defective mobo.

Oh, yeah. One other idea. Try connecting one of the hdd's in place of a CD drive and see if it is detected. This may reveal a defective hdd too.

I unhooked the 2nd HD. Still nothing so I changed the jumper to cap limit on the new HD. It did recognize the HD as the slave. As soon as I changed the jumper back to Master is wouldnt recongnize it. Strange.. It seems like the Mobo and hard drive are good. Anybody have any suggestions from here?

When you changed the jumper back to Master, did you move the drive from the middle IDE connector to the end one? The Master should be the drive on the far end of the cable, with the Slave connection nearer to it than the mobo.

You sure you aren't looking at the jumper chart backwards/upside down? Review the chart and the jumper block appearance very carefully.
