Newbie looking to build first PC
I've been doing some research for the last 4 or 5 days on building a high-end Gaming/Video-Editing/Media PC. I have I'd say above average knowledge of PC's though I'm no expert by a long shot. This is what I've come up with so far as to what I think I want in my PC, please any responses/tips/suggestions would be much appreciated! I'm looking for all the help I can get!
Tower Case: Either a Antec Sonata II or a Antec P150 Motherboard: Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe Internal Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3400832AS/ 400GB CPU Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Video Card: ATI X850XT DVD-ROM/Writer: Sony DRU-810A If I'm missing anything.. Just let me know! |

Welcome to PCM.
Looks like a strong start, but I have a few suggestions. No need for an SLI motherboard if you don't plan to use two video cards. Seagate drives are good, but skip the .8 series. They were a bad batch. The newer .9s are better. Be sure to grab one with a 16mb cache instead of 8mb. I would suggest going dual core with the Athlon 64 X2 3800+ or higher. With a multi-task PC, it will be very useful. Don't forget Windows XP. Do you have a budget? If so, do you need the computer only, or a monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers, etc?

I would choose the Sonata. The included 450w PSU gives you a bit more headroom for upgrades later. |

I would change that DVD burner to a Liteon.
Better quality, comes with the burning software and from a much more reputable company. Sony used to be good but has developed serious ethics issues in the last couple of years.

How about the ASUS A8N-SLI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard, What is everyones opinions of it? As it comes with Firewire Capabilities which the Asus A8N5X does not, this is big for me as I will be doing alot of video editing work. Again, price doesn't really doesn't have a limit, I'm just looking for the best board which will enable me to do high-end video editing/gaming... Also it'd be nice if the board was easily ugradeable for the future. Thanks you guys have been alot of help!!
