Want to start a build
Hello all
Im a no0b here and know close to nothing about building computers. Ive read the stickeys and think this is worth posting. Someone recommended http://www.newegg.com/ which looks pretty good. Now, I was told to start with the motherboard and Ive been looking around at a few. Before I ask I want to spend about $800-1000 on a new build, put XP in, and want to use it for moderate gaming. Im slow on the terms so what do things like 4x184pin mean? What brands are better? what brands should I avoid? How much should I look to spend for a motherboard with my budget? Next is the CPU. How much should I spend on a CPU? What should I buy/avoid? I ask more later, I think thats enough for now. Thanks for any help you guys can give me! Paul |

The main decision you need to make before any parts decisions are made is whether you want to build an Intel or AMD system. Today, there's virtually nothing to choose between them in either price or performance, so toss a coin. The only thing I can say to guide you is that gamers tend to go AMD, and those who work with audio/video tend to build Intel.
Also, is your budget just for the computer, or do you need peripherals and a monitor too? FK

Let's keep this in one thread. I'm closing this one and moving the other one to BYOPC form.
