Starting Over!
ok, i know i have been on here before, annoying you all for info on building my own computer. but since then i have been going in a whole new direction. this computer will be playing some games, battlefield 2, call of duty 2, brothers in arms etc. like what i wanted before, but in addition to that, it will also be a media center PC, because i need a computer for my 2-3000 pictures, and i need to get ACID Pro so i can record my band playing. i have recently taken over the massachusetts branch of InCiNeR8 Productions, so now i will need a PC for video editing. that being said, what exactly do i need? i was thinking at least a 120gb hard drive, i definately need a dvd burner, i need a graphics card that will run games at high settings, and i need a fast processor. i also know that this will be like a hole in your heart, but which is better: Dual-Core Intel, or single-core AMD? right now i am thinking of going the Dual-Core Intel. sorry for the long post, thanks for all of your help.

How much are you willing to spend?
I suggest: AMD 64, with 4gb of ram, 800gb HD space, dual burners (DVD-RW and combo/CD-RW) Are you using the pc to encode/record sound into it directly? Are you going to mount the pc to tv?

wow 800 gbs? thats not a little overkill? anyways, i am on a wicked tight budget, with the maximum being $900, not including monitor, mouse, keyboards speakers, etc. yes i am using my pc to record sound directly, by hooking it up to my mixer.

This website should give you an idea:
http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2659&p=8 Yes, since video editing requires space. I give 80gb to my video editing. |

that helps a lot. sorry i took so long, i was away for the past week or so and i had no access to a computer. there are some things in there that i can cut back on, like a $300 monitor, i can use one from my school for now. (they are perfectly good, they are just being thrown away) and i dont really need $112 speakers, and i already have a dvd burner, that i can use for the tim being. if i use all the things on that list, and throw away the ones i just mentioned, i can get the price down to around $812. i would probably go dual core intel though, so that is something i need to think about.

Dual core Intel is a good choice for that use - on an Asus P5LD2 motherboard - and a midrange consumer video card being the best of both worlds - gaming and video editing. Go for 2gb of ram, more is overkill right now.
I'd put 2 hard drives in - something like an 80 gig main drive for the OS and applications and games, and a big one for the videos and other data files. Go SATA on both. |
