I can't believe I only have one problem
I finally completed by first build and to my suprise it worked from the first push of the power button
. I just have one minor annoyance that I can't seem to find a fix for. Here is the message I just sent to ASUS the other day:I just built a system using this A8N5X motherboard and everything is working fine except for one problem. I have an "HP PSC 1350 All In One" printer that was previously connected to another Windows/Asus/AMD system via USB and it worked without problems. I am now hooking this printer up to the A8N5X. When I start the PC it will not boot. I get to the first "Asus" screen where you can hit DEL to enter the BIOS. Nothing further happens. When I hit DEL nothing happens...I do not get into BIOS. When I unplug this printer from the USB port and reset the machine, it boots up perfectly. The bios that I loaded out of the box was version 0502. I have tried updating to versions 0602 and 0902 but get the same results when the printer is plugged in.! The current boot order is CD drive->HDD This is the first response I got back from ASUS(1 day turnaround by the way): To test the usb ports on the board, try using something else that doesn' t pull as much power. Something like a usb keyboard, or mouse, or perhaps a flash drive. If those devices work fine, then there isn't any issues with the ports on the motherboard. Also try moving the devices to each of the usb ports, and see if you still have the same problem. If so, then perhaps there is an issue with the board, but I have a difficult tim! e believing that all the usb ports on the motherboard would fail. If you believe that the motherboard is defective, the please contact our Customer Service Dept at 510-739-3777 option 3. Thank you! And here was the response I just sent back: Thanks for the response. I have plugged in a USB mouse to each of the USB ports and the machine boots up without a problem. But regardless of what USB port I plug this printer into I have the problem that I described in my initial email. So I guess I agree that there is not a problem with the USB ports or the motherboard itself. Possibly there is a setting in BIOS that can be changed, but I don't know what this would be. Maybe there is a problem with BIOS - I don't know. One additional note: When the PC has booted properly and windows has started I can plug this printer into any of the USB ports and it works. Please let me know where I go from here. If anyone has any suggestions for things I can do to fix this I would appreciate it. |

my HP scanner doesn't work with ASUS boards either so it is no surprise. HP products don't work well with ASUS.

Only thing I can think of would be if you've got the boot order set to try and boot from an external USB device first, before the hard drive. I know you said your boot order was CD then HDD, but did you double check this and make sure the USB option wasn't in there?

I have two HP scanners and two HP printers on two machines and no problems. Contact HP support and they will walk you thru it. They are usually very prompt. Did you download the latest XP drivers from HP?

There have been problems with USB ports and current BIOS revisions on Asus motherboards. Try reverting back to an earlier BIOS revision that will support your configuration.

Does that printer have card reader slots? If so, it's trying to boot from them, you have to turn off boot from USB capability in the bios.

Yes, absolutely there are card reader slots. What kind of setting would I be looking for in BIOS to change? I have looked through the menus but have not seen anything that is obviously controlling this. Thanks.

At least with mine, it's one of the options when you set boot orders. 1st boot device can be CD drive, HDD, Floppy, USB, etc (2nd boot device has the same options, and 3rd, etc). Not sure about ASUS boards and the BIOS version they use.

Boot device priority - take "removable" out of the boot order if you don't have a floppy drive. If you do have a floppy, then go into the removable drives submenu and make sure the floppy drive is the only thing showing in there.
