Ultimate gaming PC

I would like to get opinions from the gamers out here. I would like to to build an ultimate gaming machine from scratch. Could I get some opinions on what you guys/gals think would be the best processor, Motherboard, RAM, HD, Peripherals (Video Card, Sound Card, Ethernet Card, etc), Case, Fan, etc. I'd like to spend around $1000 tops. I appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Do you prefer AMD or Intel? Both are good for gaming.

Does the $1000 include only the computer, or do you need a monitor, speakers, keyboard/mouse, Windows XP ?

Just the computer itself. I heard AMD is best for gaming. I'll take opinions on others though.

Well, you absolutely can't build an "ultimate gaming machine", for $1000, but you CAN build a good performer for that money. Here's my try:

AMD 3700+ CPU=$206
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103539

MOBO ASUS A8N5X=$79
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131569

Cosair Value Select Ram (2X1Gb)=$164
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145579

LiteOn DVD RW=$38
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106013

LiteOn DVD ROM=$24
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106027

Maxtor Diamondmax 10 16Mb cach 250Gb Hard Drive=$75
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144235

Antec Sonata II case with 450 watt PSU=$100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129155

Total so far is $686 (+shipping). For video cards, either of these:

eVGA 7900GT superclocked=$295 before $20 rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130016

OR

Sapphire X1800XT=$319
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102663

OS Windows Home with SP2=$88
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102059

Total is $1069 (+shipping) if you go with the 7900 GT, and it is $1093 with the X1800XT. Either of these video cards will play any game currently available and play it well. They will be good into the future as well. This is not a top of the line system, but is probably as good as you can do within your budget. Just something to give you an idea.

I merged your threads together so we can follow along.

That build list looks fine. The motherboard has built in Gigabit LAN, so no need for the card.

I would switch the motherboard to the Asus jfk mentioned, excellent board for an excellent price.

Don't forget opticals, the ones in jfk's list are good.

Dont' forget Windows XP.

If you're not needing the highest quality sound that the Creative X-Fi provides, then consider giving the on-board MB audio a try, you get decent quality 8 Channel audio with the MSI Neo4.

For an "ultimate gaming pc", I'd much rather see that $150 invested in a top spec video card, like the 7900GT.

That's exactly what I was about to post.

Onboard sound has always been enough for me.. and even when it's not, I think a $150 card is overkill unless you're a serious audiophile.

For a gamer, you would be far better off with the video cards I mentioned and the 2 gigs of ram. Modern games are ram hogs. Obviously, the choice is yours. As mentioned, don't forget opticals and a copy of Windows. That will add about $140 or so to your cost, plus shipping. Also, if you want the Xi Fi, they make a less expensive version of it. It's a great card, but I have an Audigy 2ZS and I can't really tell the difference...plus the ZS is only about $70. Again, just another option. I figured to save $$ you could use onboard sound for a while and then add a sound card later.
