System Check

Hello all, I've been lurking at this forum picking up info for the last couple weeks, this is my first post. Its been about 5 years since I bought a new computer and when I got Oblivion it wouldn't work so I decided to build a new one. I've never built one before, so I was wondering if you guys could look at the parts I've picked out and make sure I haven't picked out any incompatible parts or ripoff(note that I'm on a $650 budget and am already 40 over) deals. Thanks very much for any help!

A couple things. I wouldn't plan on using the Aspire PSU in that case. Junk. Replace it with a more reputable unit. If you want to save some money, ditch the sound card for the moment and use the onboard sound (savings of $75). You can always add a sound card later. Personally, I'd lose the Aspire case, and use a Antec Sonata II that comes with a QUALITY 450 watt PSU. It retails for $100 at Newegg. Might not have the "bling" of the Aspire, but it is a far more functional case. I would then either add a DVD RW (LiteOn for about $38 from Newegg) in addition to the DVD ROM you mention or replace the DVD ROM with the Liteon DVD RW. That way you can also burn DVD's, and the LiteOn series comes with NERO software. Other than those points it looks fine. These few changes would result in a net change in cost of anywhere from -$20 to -$40 over what you have now. Just another option....................

looks good but I'd get a different case without a power supply and buy a psu that is a good one. Also don't you want a dvd rom\dvd burner combo?

Hard drive: get one with a 16Mb cache, and 80Gb isn't very much space.
Sound: That board already has pretty good 8 channel, try it out before you get a card. If you don't have pretty high end speakers, you probably won't notice the difference with a sound card anyway.
Case/psu: aspire power supplies are terrible quality with a very high failure rate, if you must have that case toss the PSU and get one from a reputable manufacturer.
Switch that sony optical drive to liteon.
You are likely to need a floppy drive at some point in the setup.
Don't forget to order an OS. The OEM version of XP Home w/SP2 will be fine unless you need some specific feature of XP Pro or want the Media Center Edition.
Ram: check the qvl for that motherboard at the asus site or use a configurator to be sure you are ardering the correct part number.

And this for a DVD drive, will this read and write?

More specifically, the QVL lists all the part numbers of the RAM modules that are tested and known to work with the motherboard.

err, I don't see any Patriot brand on the qvl here http://www.asus.com/999/download/pro...596/596_10.pdf
does this mean the ram won't work with the mobo?
