antec sonata 2 case/psu about $100
Windows XP w/sp2 oem about $90
Seagate or WD hard drive sata, 80 gb about $50
Pentium d 805 about $110
Asus or intel motherboard w/onboard video and 945 chipset $100 +/-
That is about $450 there. Leaves about $50 for shipping and/or to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one.
You can use the old cd drive for now.
That setup will be pretty upgradeable. You can add a video card or newer optical drives later if you want.
Edit: oops, forgot the ram. 2 x512Mb of Corsair value select: about $75
That puts it a little over $500, but with quality parts and good upgradability.

You need to buy XP unless you have a full legal copy, not one that shipped with a name brand computer.

Xeons are server processors. Way above your budget level.

The Sonata is not only a case but has an excellent quality power supply. Power supplies should never be bought on the cheap.

The case looks fine. Ya, true but it doesn't look like he's going to do any gaming on it.

Doesn't matter...you really never want to use a cheap power supply in your computer.

The case would be OK, but the power supply is not. It doesn't even look like it is ATX 2.0 spec needed for PCI-E builds (yes, you have onboard, but still, you should not use a junky power supply). "Blingy" cases and quality power supplies don't go together. Also to be frank, you can't be real picky on a tight budget. I'll uphold the suggestion of the Antec Sonata II (AND quality power supply).

Really only you can determine the size of the hard drive needed...I don't know what your file storage needs are and how much you have right now. You could stick with a 80GB for now and add another, larger drive once your funds replenish. If you can spring another $50, you can get a 250GB drive w/16MB cache.

Aspire power supplies are no good either. Look at Antec and Fortron/FSP/Sparkle for good ones.

You aren't going to put a socket 754 processor in a Socket 939 motherboard.

You may not think so, but you will probably wind up having to get a video card. I don't think you will be satisfied with the performance of onboard video.

Why are you looking at a older Socket 754 Athlon 64? There are much faster Socket 939 Athlon 64s now.

Like said before, you need the socket on the processor and the motherboard to match. Also, try a cheaper case like this (I personally don't care for top handle), or this (it has side ports like your current pick, you will need to get a 120mm fan w/ this too), or this (great cooling options on this one), or this (looks pretty similar to your pick), and that's about all that I found that I think you may like, but here's the link to where I was looking: Cases. Then, buy a seperate power supply (I have read WONDERFUL things about this, and I wish I would have found out about it before I bought my current power supply, plus, Xcilo is on the highest quality p.s. forum). You can use the money you saved to upgrade your processor to more recent technology (I am an intel fanboy, but this one looks similar to your last pick but it is compatible with your mobo). Good luck with your build!

EDIT: Go with Corsair Value select ram. 1GB should be plenty (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440) and MS Windows XP Home OEM (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102059) This (case 50, proc. 110, ps 40, mobo 65, ram 80, os, 90) brings your total to $435 before shipping. You could probably even squeeze in a video card (I do ATI, so this is my recommendation. Since you have integrated video, if the open box doesn't work, you can send it back and still have video). With the open box video card, your total is $485 (before shipping) and that would be a really good budget system.

andper10: Please edit your signature, it's oversize as per the forum rules. Thank you.

Yes, the Aurora case is awfully expensive for someone who is on a budget. Why don't you just get an Antec Sonata II case - this comes with an excellent power supply and is only $100 for the whole thing. Do you want to pay for bling or function? It's hard to get both without busting a tight budget.

I recommended a processor in your other thread - a 3800+ 939 for around $150. That's the most bang for the buck right now.

You seem to be obsessed with "fast" - well, ANY modern processor is going to be fast. For what you want to do (Photoshop, big files) the amount of ram is a lot more important. You need at LEAST 1gb, and 2gb would be even better. A separate video card would help too - onboard video uses system ram. You don't need a high end card - a $50 Radeon X550 would do the job - just don't get a Hypermemory or (Nvidia) Turbocache card - they also steal system ram. If you get a video card, get the Asus A8N5X motherboard.

No, save your money now - and buy everything after Christmas. Anything you buy now will be cheaper and/or obsolete by then. Only buy stuff now that won't depreciate - you could buy a case now and not get burned. Do not buy a motherboard, processor, ram, hard drive, or optical drive now.

Thermaltake Soprano Black and 300/350W PSU. I'd spend about $80 on 'em both. Me loves Tt.

A 300/350 watt power supply to run a Socket 939 Athlon 64 based system? I don't think so. I'd bump that to 400/450 watts.
