Cant get my brand new assembly of parts to work. Need massive help

I bought a new bunch of parts to assemble into a computer. A Pentium D 930, MSI motherboard P4N SLI, NVIDIA 6600 GT, Maxtor SATA HD, 2 GB OCZ DDR2, and DVD Burner and CD Drive. I installed all the parts and put the wires in the right places to the best of my knowledge. When I power the thing on the processor fans kick on and the HD spins and the Video Card processor fan spins but I get nothing in the display. I also cannot open the CD Drives when the ribbon cable is connected to the IDE port. Does anyone have any suggestions on what may be causing this problem. I tried another video card on the board but that didn't help anything. Please e mail me or reply if you have any advice and can save some frustration. Thanks

THe 6600GT can be either PCI-E or AGP. Judging from the fact that saintpcr's system went together alright, it's probably the PCI-E version.

saintpcr -- try taking the video card and/or RAM out and see if you get beeps.

Back to basics. Take it out of the case and follow this:

What Power Supply are you using? That hardware doesn't require a super dooper powersupply, but please list the brand, wattage and model number.

Check once more to make sure everything has been connected properly - including all power cables to the motherboard, harddrives, opticals, etc.

If the out of case build fails, post back.

My power supply is 450 watts. the video card is PCIe. I've taken everything out multiple times now to no avail. Could it be a blown motherboard?

It could, you know those little plugs that fit over one prong, like the usb headers, if you get just one wrong, it could fry the motherboard.

It might be a fried motherboard. I am going to individually test each component and see if i can narrow down what the problem is.

If the system does nothing out of the case, you have a defective component.

I would start by trying a new power supply.

What is the brand of the one you have?

Generic... that could be your problem. Time to take a look at that link I posted and get a PSU from the "good" list.

Open up the case and tell us what is on the label. Thats the easiest way.

Xion power supplies are junk.

If you bought a SLI motherboard, you should get a SLI-certified power supply.

http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone2_build.html

Got all the connectors hooked up? That board requires a 24 pin main ATX *and* a 2x2 ATX +12v connector to be connected.

But why would all the fans work and the hard drive spin if the power supply isn't working?

It can work just fine but still be a bad PSU.

What they are trying to tell you is its a proven to not be a good quality made PSU in which if it goes bad it can take everything else with it Motherboard, CPU etc

A computer PSU puts out several different voltages. If any one voltage isn't working up to par; the computer won't start but the other voltages still can provide current to run fans/drives/stand by led on mobo/etc.

found out the problem. tigerdirect.com misstated the motherboards specs and it cannot handle a PD 930 series processor. so i sent everything back and am getting a new ASUS PWD motherboard, Pentium D 940, 2 GB of 800 mhz ram, and a SATA300 hd in replacement.
