Hmmm, what do I do now?
Hi, Im new! I'd say I know a little about computer software issues but hardware scares me. BIOS/CMOS are not my strongest areas!
I replaced my old motherboard (went bust) on my second PC with a standard one, new RAM, new processor/heatsink and hooray, it booted up. Set up the standard CMOS settings (didnt have to change much). At this point the hard drive (the one i had before) and CD drive are recognised. Anyway, while it's booting it goes to some kind of scan (i can press cntrl+H to go to some BIOS settings, this bit says something about creating arrays... Never heard of this before). The scan seems to not find any primary/secondary master/slaves. Then there is another scan (something about RAID). Cntrl-S goes to a boot up order screen (currently floppy, HD etc.). Then the windows crash recovery screen appears, if i select Safe Mode it boots the files up ok, then the system restarts. If i select anything else it just restarts. This would suggest that windows isnt right but I was wondering if that was to do with the new mboard? Do I need to format? This would be a last resort as there is a fair amount of stuff that i could use on there. Anything you can help me with, even if it is to discount something, would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Due to the hardware changes you have made you will need to do a repair/install of XP in order to correct some hardware driver issues Windows has now got.
Can you tell us what exact make and model your computer was before the changes? What version of XP did you have on your machine? there should be a COA sticker somewhere on the case saying what it is. Have a good look to see what CD's you had with the machine originally. |

You may have to buy a new copy of XP. Microsoft is tightening up the licensing - a motherboard swap is now considered a different computer.

No you will need an XP cd that is the same version as what is on your machine ie: XP Home, XP Pro, XP Home SP1(SP2) or XP Pro SP1(SP2).
