need help!

I used to have a Pentium 3 450Ghz Processor and decided I wanted to move it on up to a P4 1.8Ghz Processor. Being on such a low budget I've been trying to do my best to fix this computer to where it will be at least a little bit decent. The first problem I ran into was that I didn't have an ATX Power Supply for the 12v 2x2 hook up. So I bought that. The next thing I ran into was that it takes RAMBUS memory, so I got two sticks of that. (I hooked up the CRIMMS in the second bank.) Before I got the memory I tried to run it (Not thinking about the consequences) When it came on I smelled a funny smell, but not too serious of a smell, just like something plastic burning. I had the computer on without a heatsink, and without memory.. but I only had it on for like 5 seconds and I shut it off.. So I pray that I didn't kill the CPU. Anyways.. the third problems was that I didn't have a heatsink for the CPU.. so I went to a local retailer and bought a used 473 socket Heatsink not knowing it wasn't compatible with a 423 socket (Which is the new motherboard I bought). Well today I installed the RIMM memory, and I kinda rigged the 473 socket sit on top of the CPU with the silver insulation stuff you put in between.. I know it's kinda obvious that I've messed something up, or I'm not doing something right.. but I'm dropping my pride and coming to the forum for advice. The little green light on the motherboard comes on when I boot, so does the cooling fan, and the heatsink/cooling fan. The CD rom works, Floppy works... but when I boot it the screen light comes on bright, then goes dim after like a seconds. Please give any advice possible. I'm desperate. Thanks!

First thing I would want to do is have that processor tested to see if it is still good or not.

I agree with ktkendall...even though P4's have speed throttling to reduce heat, running the CPU without a heatsink may have caused some damage. Have the CPU checked out.

What would be the best way to have it tested? Try it on another 423 socket mb? Cause if that's the case I don't know anyone that has one. Thanks.

Check your area for computer repair stores. You might have a small outfit somewhere nearby that you can take the CPU to. For a small fee, they can put it in a board and see if it works or not.

Low budget or not, you have to do your homework a little better. You have 2 strikes already - socket 423 and Rambus. These are both things to stay as far away from as you can. Brand new components are so cheap now that trying to recycle used stuff like that is no savings.
