Hello:
I would like to get an opinion on a barebones kit I just purchased. PC mechanic said the best was a "beast" and the rep at Tiger Direct said that this kit was a beast. Your opinion would be welcome no matter how bad it made me feel Here are the components: (1) Asus A8N SLI Deluxe NVIDIA Socket 939 Motherboard / PCI Express / Audio / Dual Gigabit LAN / SLI / Serial ATA / Dual RAID / USB 2.0 & Firewire / (1) Masscool / Socket 754, 939, 940 / AMD Athlon 64 / Ball Bearing / CPU Cooling Fan / (1) AMD Athlon 64 3500+ ClawHammer Socket 939 CPU / (2) Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3 Memory / (1) Premium 2531 Blue ATX Mid-Tower Case with Clear Side, Front USB and Audio Ports / (1) Ultra / X-Finity / 500-Watt / ATX / 120mm Fan / SATA-Ready / SLI-Ready / Titanium Blue / Power Supply Regards, Mentordas |

Looks like a good list of parts to me. Ultra is a lesser used brand for RAM, but it should be fine. In the future I would keep clear of Tiger Direct for major parts like these though. They have a rep for being quite a pain about returns if something does happen, but just something to keep in mind for next time. Newegg.com has pretty much been the gold standard for a few years now.

Thank you for your comments. I am glad the the parts look good. You are right I have already had some problems with TigerDirect. But by far the most difficult was with their rebate program. There were many steps to the rebate and many items that needed to be included. also some of the parts had 2 rebates each. I got the impression that they made it so difficult because they wanted to deny your rebate. If you ever see onrebate.com duck and run.
I will try newegge for my next buy. Thanks again, mentordas |

Checked the ratings for Tiger Direct & Newegg. This is a great service and shows the differences between companies. Tiger direct does not rate very high with their customers. I wonder if PCMECH could put a link on their tips to these ratings that would stop newbies like me from falling into their trap?
Thanks, Mentordas |

Clawhammer? They are pushing old core technology off on you, it's going to run HOT. That and all that Ultra stuff makes me want to stay away from that one.
There's a LOT of Tiger bashing in the threads in these forums - spend some time reading and searching and you will find them. |
