Did you set the CD drive that your WinXP cd is in as the first boot device, ahead of the hard drive?

Edit: Oops, you posted right before me. Disregard that question.

Your other post on the same issue doesn't mention what cpu you are using, might be a compatability issue there.
Also brand and amount of RAM isn't shown in your list, what did you use?
Quote:
I used a "asus intel 810E CUWE-FX Flex ATX Socket 370" as my motherboard, a "Western Digital 26400 WD Caviar 6.4GB_MDL: AC26400-60RTTO" as my Hardisk and a "16x DVD/40x CDRom" as my Rom drive. Also there is a floppy drive.

And I bet it's a burned CD, not a genuine Microsoft holographic CD? Do you have a certificate of authenticity?

With those specs, I'd advise an older operating system. a 6gb hard drive is going to fill up fast.

well my cpu is"Intel Celeron FV524RX 433MHZ"
and ram is "RAM: 2 Sticks of Kingston: KVR133Q/128R
KTC6611/64

oh and no its not bootleg i borrowed it and he moved so i kinda justkept it. but i think you right about the size of the hardisk. Although the whole purpose of this was to teach myself but i got stuck. I wanted to build a pc with old parts so i knew how. Then actually spend the money on the good stuff...
Windows XP is only OS i have

With those specs XP is going to give you nothing but trouble if you even have enough disk space. I would download a copy of one of the linux distros that where designed for older hardware if you really want to learn. A full linux distro like Ubuntu would probobly work, but just to test the system and learn a bit, try Puppy Linux http://www.puppylinux.org/

ok so i downloaded the free "puppy linux" and burned the iso. now i ran it on my cpu and it loaded and installed. so does that mean that the windows cd is bad? Linux is alot different i am 2 used to win os... So is there a free download for maybe an older version on windows? except 3.1... but i may have to use that.

It might be a bad CD, but it might also be that the system isn't powerful enough to launch the windows XP installer. At least we do now know that the computer itself is working. If you really want to use windows on this computer, I think your best best would be if you can find a copy of 98 somewhere.

If I read it right, you have 192mb ram? This will run Windows 2000 quite well and a 6gb hard drive is adequate as is the Celeron.

EDIT: That KTC6611/64 module is showing as proprietary for a Compaq Deskpro - that Asus board may not like it. The other module is showing as standard Kingston value ram.

You need to find a copy of W 98 WITH the floppy boot disc. If you are trying to learn the ins - and - outs of how programs work, W 98 is an excellent program to use.
That hard drive is awfully small - you won't do much with that.
If you can get it booted with the floppy, pick CD Rom support from the menu - should be #3 - it's been a while since I did this - and it should begin installing. If not, something else is out of kilter..........................

Chuck, a 6 gig drive is PLENTY for anything but XP. It WILL handle XP as long as you don't install any software. In my opinion, Win2000 is the best compromise between system requirements and stability.

is it possible to just use my external HD hookup and just install 98 onto the 6.4 from my laptop? And then just put the HD into my desktop with an OS already on it? Or will the Win XP on my laptop get in the way?

I hope i explained that well enough...

Just boot it with the Win98 CD - it's bootable and installable.
