windowsxp; what now!

hello all,
I am back, got my first system working as you can see on my other thread, but anyhow, since I was finally able to install xp today, I noticed a possible screwup on newegg's part, maybe all are this way now but, i opened the xp package, and damned if i don't have a product key. all the package said was that the key had been removed but should be on the side of the computer..ok thats great!for the time being since i have not activated windows as of yet, i just borrowed(not sure i should admit that) a friends number since she has xp. anyway thats fine, it installed, but now what about when i go to activate windows, will this look at the key and say "oops, sorry" and not activate?i don't want any hacks if i don't have to but how the heck am i going to get my own windows key?

What exactly did you buy from Newegg? If you bought an OEM copy of Windows, it will come with the sticker. It will not say that the sticker is already on the computer.

If it is an OEM copy of Windows XP, the product key is either on the plastic wrapping or on the booklet that came with the CD. The product key is on there and once you installed/activated the copy, you need to affix the sticked onto the case.

It sounds like the sticker got removed somehow. gbear, if you email Newegg and explain the problem, they may very well send you a new copy.

I bought an oem copy so, if i do find the key, does this mean a reinstall or is there a magic way to re-enter the key from windows itself?

I seem to remember you can change the product key during the activation process.
