How does this look for a build?
I'm most worried about compatibility.
Motherboard: ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131013 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Windsor 2000MHz HT 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor http://www.newegg.com/product/Produc...82E16819103735 PSU: COOLMAX "EZ Wire" CU-500T ATX 500W Power Supply 115/230 V http://www.newegg.com/product/Produc...82E16817159048 RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit System Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145590 Video Card: XFX PV-T71G-UDF7 GeForce 7900 GT (470MHz) 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150144 It's a test/mock build that I sort of put together over the course of the week. I'm looking at dual-core and AM2 socket because I think I read somewhere that's a way to future proof it. The power supply comes at a combo deal with the processor. I chose Corsair because I hear they're a good brand. The vid card seems pretty powerful and within my price range. That's about it. I still need to decide on a case and monitor, but those aren't as important, right? Please, if you've got time, take a look at that and tell me about any compatibility issues that I missed and should look out for. Thanks in advance. |

That PSU is junk. Scrap it and go for something like the Antec Truepower-II 550 (it's cheaper too, and it's known to be quality)...be sure to get something SLI-certified if you're getting an SLI board.
Check ASUS's memory QVL (on their website) to see if that RAM is on the list. This list has modules they have tested to work for sure. RAM not on it, might work, but it might not. AM2 is currently very fussy about RAM. I'd rather see you go with an eVGA card...I've heard better things about them. Don't forget your hard drive, optical drive, and OS. Case won't make that much difference, but I'd look at Antec, Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Lian Li (to name a few) for quality cases. Look at cases with 120mm cooling fans...these will (can) move the same amount of air as a 80mm fan, but will do it with much less noise. Also, there's picking a case that looks good to you, since you have to look at it.... There's really no need to pay over $50, but Lian Li's and high end Thermaltakes get over $100 (not that they're not quality...)...Picking a good monitor is a good idea...are you looking at a CRT/LCD? 17"/19", etc? Price range? Provide some of those specs and I'm sure someone here can suggest something.

I wouldn't know what's a good PSU or not, so thanks for the heads up. I was also looking at an eVGA card, but all the ones I was interested in were listed as "Out of Stock" on newegg. But I'll probably get an eVGA card in the end anyways. As for the RAM stuff, it turns out to be quite a pain looking for matching RAM in the QVL (what does that stand for, btw?), but I'll be looking more into that, since I only went through 3-4 brands only.
Also, I'm leaning towards the ThermalTake Armor, through various recommendations from magazines and word of mouth. As for the monitor, I'm looking at an LCD that's at least 19". But no solid details on those yet. But I'm definitely going to get a good monitor - no point in getting a good vid card with a cruddy monitor to watch it on. =P I've got a quick OT question though: I had an older HP that crapped out on me (fried mobo), and I was thinking of reusing the 80GB harddrive that came with it. I figure that way, I could get a smaller new HD and save myself some money there, as well as reinstalling WindowsXP that's on the old HD and not have to buy a new WinXP. Would that be a good or bad idea? |

You can reuse the old hard drive, but not the HP load of XP.

Thanks for the suggestions and help, as I've taken them to heart. My order was placed in 3 parts and I'm waiting for the third installment of them in 2 days.
This is what I've got now: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thermaltake Armor Series VA8000BWS Black Aluminum/Steel ATX Full Tower http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16811133154 ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe (Socket AM2, NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16813131013 AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Socket AM2, Dual Core Processor) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819103735 Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16817103931 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (2x) Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820134045 [--Originally, I planned on 1GB stick of Kingston's DDR2800 for the same price as these 2 sticks, but newegg didn't have them in stock at the time. But 2GB at a lower frequency should be better than 1GB at a higher frequency, right?] Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM (Perpendicular Recording Technology) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16822148140 eVGA Geforce 7600GT CO 256MB PCI Express x16 http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814130283 Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS 7.1 Channels http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16829102178 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hanns·G JW-199DPB Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16824254001 [ --Quick question: How reputable is Hanns·G? I've never heard of the brand before, but the specs and price looked good.] Logitech X-530 70 Watts 5.1 Speaker http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16836121118 Logitech Internet Pro Desktop (Standard Keyboard Mouse Included) http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16823126152 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And a little something to flex my new technological muscles: F.E.A.R.: First Encounter http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16832202019 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ More likely than not, you didn't read through everything XD, but there were 2 questions I included in the above. 1. What's better - 1GB of RAM at 800MHz or 2GB of RAM at 667MHz? 2. How reputable is the Hanns·G brand? They make my monitor. Thanks in advance, hehehe. |
