New older build
Hi, I haven't posted for awhile but I want to build a computer that is specifically for office work and playing video games. I want to save some money and use slightly outdated components.
Mobo - ASUS P4P800SE Socket 478 Intel 865PE ATX Intel Motherboard – Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131484 CPU - Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache Socket 478 Processor – OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116175 Planning on OC’ing this cpu, might try water cooling for the first time Hard Drive (Used for OS and programs) - Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144160 I have another hard drive that I will use for storage RAM – I have 2 x 512 MB of CORSAIR XMS 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory – Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145420 I might get another two sticks of this for 2 gigs of RAM PSU – XCLIO XClio 450BL ATX 450W Power Supply 115/230 V UL http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817189003 Monitor - SAMSUNG 930B-Black Black 19" 8ms LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 700:1 0.294mm Pixel Pitch - Retail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001063 I have a 9800Pro right now, what would be a good improvement over this card for under $200? I also have a good sound card, OS, tv tuner, speakers, etc… I know that the newer technology is faster, but I plan on overclocking and want to save more money in the process.

Your list looks fine as it is. However,
Keep in mind that you may be saving a few dollars but you are cutting yourself off from any future upgrades. Intel no longer makes 478 CPUs, and video cards no longer come in AGP. You listed the OEM version of that CPU, keep in mind that does not come with a HSF. You might want to buy the Retail version if you aren't buying a cooler now. |

I believe the Retail CPU costs more than a new LGA775 CPU with the better specs (a 630 (2MB of L2 cache) is less than $170 and a Retail 3.0E is almost $200). Doing water cooling isn't going to be cheap, so I don't see how you are going to save money. Also, overclocking an office machine isn't really wise. DDR also costs a bit more, and going with XMS RAM won't save you money either.

You are not saving any money by using outdated components, those 478 Prescotts are quite pricey because they are all secondary market now. The only thing that you will be sacrificing by going with a 775 and a "modern" motherboard is the ability to use your standard DDR ram - unless you can find a 915 chipset board that uses DDR instead of DDR2 (like a P5GV-MX). If you are replacing the 9800 Pro anyway, it only makes sense to go with PCI-E. Note that the P5GV-MX is not dual core compatible.
If you want an AGP board that's 775 - *and* dual core compatible - look at the P5P800 SE. Not a great overclocker though. If you go 775, you can use Cedar Mill processors which run a lot cooler than Prescotts. |
