Need help with my shopping list
Hi. My Dell Dimension 8400 finally died a slow death after only 18 months so I sent it back. This is what I had.
Dell Dimension 8400,P4 Processor 560(3.6GHz)w/HT & 1MB cache 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHZ 19 in Flat Panel Display 256 MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 GTO Graphics Card 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM) Win XP Home Intel Pro 1000 Integrated Nic card DVD DL (Still have) Want DVD w/LightScribe SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI w/Dolby Dig EX, 7.1 ch.THX cert 5.1 surround sound speakers I paid 2220.85 for a system that wasn't worth a dollar. I would like to build a brand new system from the ground up that is BETTER than the crap that I had before, preferring to spend around 800.00. Please help me. If you had a $800-1000 budget to build a new computer starting with case, EXACTLY what would you put in the shopping cart? I need as many opinions/suggestions/advice as possible so I can build the best machine for my bucks. Not a big gamer, but I do enjoy playing Half-Life and such every so often. I do ALOT of internet surfing, college work, and ALOT ALOT ALOT of video editing, movie watching, downloading, etc. I've looked at almost every site, NewEgg, etc. Part reviews are so misleading and contradictory. I just need to be told exactly what I should buy to have a complete system that won't let me down like the Dell did. Please help! I truly appreciate your help! |

Any more suggestions?
Thanks for the info so far. I need as many suggestions as possible so I can come up with the best recommended list.
BTW, links above do not work. Can you post again? Thanks to anyone you can help. Really need your expertise. |

Tweak24's list is exactly what I would choose. Note that it probably would not perform a heck of a lot better than that Dell - the only real improvements are a dual core processor and twice the ram. If you do a lot of video editing I'd probably get a bigger hard drive.

If you do want a bigger hard drive, the Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s has a 16Mb cache which will be a little better performance and with the rebate is 5 bucks less than the equivalent Seagate with an 8Gb cache.

How is this system?
Again, I'll be using it for word processing, alot of web surfing, occassional games like Half-Life 2, and tons and tons of movie watching, downloading, editing.

If you want to save money, switch the motherboard to the Asus P5LD2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131538 Asus makes very high quality boards.
You can also drop down to DDR2-533. Anything higher is unnecessary with your CPU if you don't plan to overclock. The rest looks good. |
