Having a PC problem
Hey all,
My PC build AMD AM2 Athlon 64 3000+ MSI MS-7260 K9N Neo-F 550 Kingston 512MB DDR2 533 x 2 MSI 6600GT 128MB DDR SDRAM Sonic Gear Casing 300W It was working fine for a month now until yesterday my computer just froze and i had to switch it off. I restart my comp and monitor was not displaying anything..so i took everything out and followed Hal's troubleshooting steps. This is what i notice:- 1> HDD is quite, not spinning or vibrating (normally can feel some vibration) 2> Monitor not showing anything 3> fan for power supply and processor still spins So I took out the power supply and replace it with another power supply, and same thing happen. But this time only the CPU and power supply are connected, all fans are spinning but no display on monitor. Please share some of your thoughts about this.. |

Two things that can be causing your problem where the computer fails to even post, is a faulty motherboard or a bad processor. I have had a few motherboards go south on me in the past with the same exact symptoms as you but they all have been DOA (Dead On Arrival). I have had a dead processor once when I was working as a tech for a high school and it exhibited the same symptoms too.
The PSU going bad was a possibility, but you swapped it out with a working one, so that eliminated that option. Unless the originally power supply (im not familiar with that brand, sounds like a off brand though) died, it killed your motherboard and/or processor too. It could be faulty memory, if you have more then one stick, see if you can get it to boot with just one stick installed at a time. If you have a spare one lying around that you know is functional, pop that one in and see if the pc will post. But usually when there is a memory problem, there will be BIOS beeps codes going off during power up. Was there any beeps??? Last possibility is your video card went south on you. But you stated that the hard drive doesn't seem to be spinning or working like normal which may mean that the computer is not able to boot like it normally would. If your video card is dead and there is no other problems, the system usually will still boot like normal you just don't get any video output and you should see the HDD activity light flashing during startup so... I think in the end it boils down to the MOBO or the CPU, but I could be horribly wrong though.

..thanks for those post
i went over to a friends place and use his PSU instead...he has a good PSU...plug it in and fans all spinning but still no display on the monitor..so i think my PSU could have gone haywire and burn the mobo..which is a very sad thing indeed... now i hope im able to send it back to the shop and get it replace.. question> how do u know your mobo or processor is fried? is there any indication? is there a way to test it out? ta |

If you have definitely determined it's the CPU or motherboard with a minimum OUT OF THE CASE test, the only way to determine which is by parts substitution.
