Yo guys heatsink/processor help!

Hey there pcmech, i just started working on my first build, and ive encountered a slight problem.. with my amd athlon 64 3500+ processor, im not exactly sure on how im suppose install my heatsink? Im not sure if im missing my heatsink compound, cause i read most processors come with the compound but i dont see any here. Or is this processor the type where you have the pad and dont use the compound? I tried reading the directions that came with the processor they dont seem helpful. If i do have to go out and buy some sort of compound, can i get it from stores like Best Buy? and what kind do you recomend? Id appeciate any help Thank you.

The stock heatsink/fan combo should have the thermal compound (pad) already pre-applied to the bottom of the heatsink.

If not, you can always pick some up at a computer shops like Fry's Electronics or a local mom and pop shop, you could order it online too.

What two pieces are you referring to?

All you have to do is pull off whatever (usually a protective film) is covering the pad and just follow the instructions on mounting it onto the processor.

Oh, on AMD 64 or Opteron processors there is NO thermal pad if I recall correctly (got that information while reading a manual from AMD). Instead, thermal grease is used. All you have to do is spread a thin layer of the grease on the processor die only (this is about the size of five (5) small grains of rice placed at the center). It is important that the thermal grease be evenly and thinly spread over the processor die ONLY, which means NO other components.

If a pad is already install, which is normally the case with PIB (retail) CPUs that have their own heatsink/fan combo, then you use that. Do not use both. Some aftermarket heatsink/fan combos don't have anything applied from the factory, which is when you'd use "grease."
