Rebuild problem
Parts:
AMD Athlon XP 2500 Barton FIC K7MNF-64 Mobo 2 sticks of DDR2700 RAM PowerQ PSU with requisite 20 and 4 pin connectors (400W) Generic case This is a rebuild, with the mobo being the new component and newly purchased, and barring really bad luck, all the other parts are known good. The problem comes with the front panel pinout, I think. I hooked everything up according to the manual, but with weird results. Pressing the power button turns the unit on fine, but holding down the reset switch turns the cpu fan to turbo. Also, pressing the power button while the unit is on produces an endless beeping and a red LED on the mobo. Now, this is with no monitor. When I hook that up, the machine starts up, shows the logo and will even give you a glimpse of the BIOS control if you hit F2 quickly enough, but it eventually hits a snag and gives me that endless beep and red LED. Conversely, not plugging the monitor in will let it run on as long as it wants. Last, but not least, powering on the machine, holding down the reset switch, then holding down the power switch eventually shuts down the machine without fuss. So all this leads me to think the pinout info is wrong (or I'm reading it wrong, it's not the clearest pinout diagram I've seen). Googling on this problem seems to lean towards problems with the PSU. Any thoughts? Dgwelder |

OK, out of the case, flat wood table, same problems. I also tried it with the 4-pin PSU connector taken out, which changed a few things, namely that there was no beeping (though no picture on monitor either), but the CPU fan was running a lot faster. Don't know if that helps. I'm leaning even harder towards the PSU being the problem at this point...

Your board has the Phoenix-Award BIOS:
Quote:
1.) Try reseating the memory (make sure it is installed correctly), if that does not work move on to the next step. 2.) Make sure the memory contacts and slots are clean, move on to the next step if this fails. 3.) Try leaving one stick in at a time and see if it will post sucessfully, if it does go to #4 4.) Try a working stick of memory in the system and see if it will boot. 5.) Replace the motherboard. ---------------------------------------------- Now with your problem connecting the case features (power button, reset button, leds, etc.) to the motherboard. Make sure you follow this diagram: ---------------------------------------------- Also be sure to double check and make sure everything is installed properly. Is the CPU installed properly? Is the heatsink and fan secured as per the instructions? You could also try resetting the CMOS. Here is how for your board: ---------------------------------------------- Make sure both the 20-pin PSU cable AND the square 4-pin ATX12V is plugged in to the motherboard. You could have a faulty PSU. I never heard of PowerQ before either, I am not sure if it is a good brand. Also are you simply using the onboard video adapter? |

Yep, that's the manual alright. As for the memory, it's unlikely that both sticks are bad. They were both working fine as of 2 weeks ago. The only thing I haven't tried is clearing the CMOS. I'll give that a try. Sadly, I don't have an alternate PSU, at least not one for this board.
Thanks for the help Dogwelder |
