I think I fried it....
I was wondering if someone could possibly guide me here. I just started putting together a new PC (second time build) and i seem to be stuck here. I put the MB in first then the CPU, a little artic silver on the CPU, installed the heatsink, 1 stick of memory, then the HD. Everything is connected properly i checked it twice. turn the thing on and just heard a loud pop.....Not really sure if i fried something here or what... any suggestions

Most of us will usually assemble the motherboard, CPU, heatsink, RAM, video card, PC case speaker (unless the motherboard has an on-board speaker) and power supply out of the case and try for first POST like that before we assemble the parts inside the case.
What brand power supply are you using? The loud pop you heard could have been one of the capacitors in the power supply exploding. Cricket

A bestec?? i've never heard of it before. Basically this was a used machine from a friend....he fried the MB in it so he bought a new machine and wanted to throw this one out. I took it and i'm replacing the MB, CPU, and heat sink. I've used the PSU b4 in another machine and it worked fine. Going to try and re assemble it outside the case....let you know what happens.
Thanks |

I think one of the compnents is bad i did exactly what you suggested MB CPU PSU and heatsink only nothing but a black screen no POST (integrated video) I don't think that it's the PSU bc the fan on the heatsink spins. Possibly the board?

Bestec power supplies are often used in Gateway and Dell machines as well as others. Some, like Dell use proprietary wiring which may not be compatible with ATX standard motherboards. Using one of these proprietary psu's may damage your mobo. Compare the link below with your wiring and make sure they are the same. Also, does that psu have the 2x2, 4 pin plug to provide the additonal 12v for the cpu?

My wires all match except.... i have extras...?! in number 11 and 20 there are suppose to be orange and red well i have 11 1 red 1 orange and 20 i have 1 grey and 1 red. Does this mean it won't work? Sorry a little new to all of this.
and yes you are right it's a e-machines psu (part of gateway) and there is also a 2x2 connector there. |

That sounds like proprietary wiring for eMachines. I'd try a different ATX psu. If you plan to stick with the on board video and audio, this 300w Sparkle Power should work fine. I'm assuming your mobo is a 20 pin connector and not a 24. If it is a 24, we need to pick a different psu.

There are good PSUs that have 20 + 4 Pin connectors. Make sure that nothing is grounded to the chassis.

Ok so i picked up a really good PSU from work tried it out (bare bones set up outside the case like recommened) still nothing.... Doesn't post nothing i think that something has to be shot, just a question of what. I tried two different stick of memory in two different slots each so it can't be that. Either has to be the MB or the CPU. Anyone ever have to return one of those before, is it a mess to do?

When you used the original PSU (Bestec) it may have died and killed other components along the way. Swap out the motherboard and see if that alleviates the problem. You can also swap out the processor next if the motherboard is not the cause of the problem.
Returning the motherboard or processor isn't a pain. Just make sure you do it before the time limit to do so expires. Last edited by minsonngo; 07-19-2006 at 06:42 AM. |

I called in the RMA today should hear back tomorrow. Borrowed a friends PCI tester at work and when i plugged it in it gave me an error code (which referencing the manual) said the board was shot. Going to send it back see what happens when the new board comes.

Good, hopefully the new motherboard will be the end of your trouble.
