how can you have both?

I found this MB at newegg and was reading the RAM interface. It says it has 2 184 DDR slots and 2 240 DDR2 slots. How is that possible.? Are 184 and 240 pinned memory the same size and shaped that allow them to be interganable on the same board (not at the same time though).

It is just as described: there are two DDR slots and two DDR2 slots on the board. You can either use one or two sticks of DDR memory or one or two sticks of DDR2 memory; you can't use both DDR memory and DDR2 memory at the same time.

When there is a transition to a new memory type, these boards pop into existence so people can reuse their old memory until they feel like buying new memory. There were similar boards with SDRAM/DDR capability too.

Usually they have two slots for each memory type and you can use one or the other type but not both.

Dr G pipped me to the post... I have one of those old SDram and DDram boards here somewhere.

Most of these boards however, that I've seen were of questionable quality...I haven't seen any ASUS or Intel boards like that.

Mine though. Last one of these babies to be made. Asus P5GDC Deluxe, Comes with 2 ddr2 slots and 4 ddr slots. As others reiterated, you can only use one or the other. Comes in handy while transitioning into ddr2. Which i will be doing soon..Only regret is the 915p chipset..sucks with overclocking. Shouldve just gotten a 945 at the time..
