hey guys, it's me the computer dummy again xP
my computer totally broke down on me the other day, and the problem is this, when i turn it on, the power comes on, and you can hear the fan running, but i can't hear the "beep" that i normally hear, and the screen stays dead as if the power's off. i took it to this computer store, and they told me the motherboard was broken, and they're charging me $200 to fix it. i thought i was getting ripped off, so i took it to my friend, and he said the CPU is broken... so given the circumstances, which part of the computer is probably actually broken? i'm so lost, please help! |

First question, is this a custom built computer, or a name brand? If a name brand, what is it?
I am more inclined to go with what the guys at the store said. Most of the time if something is going to go, it is going to be either the power supply or the motherboard. It isn't the processor all that often, unless it goes with everything else. As far as the price, does that include parts? If it does, then that isn't such a bad price.

I would go with what the guy at the shop said and suspect the motherboard.
The processor or PSU could also be the cause of you issue. What I would do is try to find a spare and swap each one out until you find the problem. What is your system specs? |

if it is the CPU you should get some sort of POST message or beeps indicating so
If it isn't POSTING, then its either the PS or the mobo (in this case probably the mobo) Also when that problem happened to me, it was because the connection between the PS and mobo was lose (it didn't appear lose, but when I unplugged it and plugged it in again it fixed the problem). It's unlikely this is it, but it's possible. So if you have another PS try it, otherwise I'd go with getting the mobo repaired. ALso a computer shop might offer to take the mobo out and not charge you if it doesn't fix the problem. |
