Motherboard for Conroe CPU

Thanks a lot for all the great advice on a new build.

After reading all the reviews on Conroe, I've decided to use the Conroe 6600 in my build. However, I checked newegg for Intel core duo compatible motherboards and only found 5, each of which states a DDR2 standard of DDR2 667 and they all have pretty mediocre reviews.

Does this mean that a DDR2-667 ram is the most I can use with these motherboards?

Which motherboard would you recommend that I use with a Conroe 6600 chip? (the one that has the best price/quality ratio).

Also, for a video card, should I get the Geforce 7600GT or X850XT for the most bang for my buck?

Finally, I've been reading some reviews for the Antec Sonata II case on newegg that states the power supply is unreliable. Any comments? Should I just buy an Antec case w/o the power supply and then buy the power supply separtely? If so, which 450 - 550 watt power supply do you recommend?

Those arn't Conroe motherboards. Those are designed for the first gen Core processors that you would find in current Macs or higher end laptops. Offical Core 2 (Conroes real name. Conroe being the pre-production codename) motherboards arn't out yet.

As for you question regarding RAM, no it isn't the max speed that you can use. 667 is simply the ideal speed for normal users not planning to overclock the system.

As for the video card, I wouldn't use anything less then a 7900GT with a Core 2 6600. That is a very powerful processor and you will be short changing yourself buy going with a mid range video card. If you need to save money, Go to the next step down in processor and get a good video card. That would be a more balanced system.

You can only set, say, DDR2-800 RAM at DDR2-677...you could still overclock the FSB (and CPU) and go up to (and over, RAM permitting) DDR2-800 speeds.

Intel has a list of boards on this page. Use the processor dropdown list to select the type then hit show results.
