Time to upgrade

Ok, in light of recent price cuts, I've decided that i might aswell take advantage of the situation and go dual core and might as well get my other gig of RAM while I'm at it.

Which has a better performance to cost ratio?

3800 X2 @$170
4600X2 @$240-ish

Also, I currently have 1 GB(2x512MB) of Corsair VS dual channel. Should I grab another set of two 512 sticks or get a set of 2X1GB?

personally i would go with the 4600X2 i think it's a better choice...also if you have for slots for the RAM i would say go 4 sticks of 512 this way if one blows it's easier to replace and not as expensive, however it would be a pain to test for sticks of RAM as opposed too two.

Also, are these price cuts for retailers in general or is it mostly for online retailers? Could I expect the same prices at a local computer store?

depends on where you go honestly where i live it's impossible to find stores that sell CPUs at a resonable price and i always order online. If you have a computer store near you though check it out maybe they will have some big sale or rebates or something...personally i think online is cheaper in the long run though

The performance increase on a X2 3800+ is actually negligible over that 3700+ San Diego you have there.
