I think I bought the wrong CPU.

Ok, on Monday I ordered all of the components for a new build, and I think I could have got a better processor for less money, but I am not sure.

I spent $209 on a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (single core) when I could have gotten an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester (dual core) for $169 or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Manchester (dual core) for $199.

These are all socket 939, and I assume all would work with the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe socket 939 mobo. Should I send back the 3700+ as soon as it gets in the door? I am under the impression that I should, and that I would see a performance improvement by jumping on the dual core wagon.

(Please clarify that the dual cores would work with the above mobo.)

Ouch...you bought right before the price cut. It's up to you - I think Newegg will charge a 15% restock fee - other places probably have similar policies - so you'll have to see if it's worth it to return it. The 3700+ isn't a bad CPU....

where do you get the things so cheap? The first one you listed I'd have to pay $370! That's Canadian,, but with the exchange rate that's still over $300 US

AMD recently slashed prices (yesterday), that's why the prices are so cheap.

Ahh, balls. I think I will take the 15 dollar restocking fee hit for the upgrade.

GraemeM, www.newegg.com

Thanks everyone.

Yay! Newegg waived the restocking fee, and I got a faster dual core for less than what I paid for the slower single core. I thank Intel for the pressure to drop prices.
